When I close down XP pro, a message comes up "it is safe to shut down your computer", or similar. Shades of Win95. How can I alter registry, or something, to get XP to shut down completely. Bazza

Either ACPI needs to be enabled in your BIOS (Maybe in a Power Management tab?) or
    from this website

Thanks noahawk. It looks like it is a "feature" of XP Pro. Same BIOS applies to my dualboot W98SE and XP Pro. Complete poweroff works OK in W98SE. Each OS is on a separate hard drive also. Naturally both use the same BIOS settings. Bazza

It must be a pretty selective "feature" since I've only seen it once or twice before. I'd have thought that the "now safe to shutdown" screen was a thing of the past, if I hadn't seen it myself.

Did you check the screens/settings mentioned in the quote in my previous post, as those only apply to settings within the WinXP environment, not in the BIOS.

    bigbazza,

I have been through this same problem myself. Boot XP, and after booting go to Control Panel - Power Options. There should be a tab that says enable ACPM or something to that effect. Check this, and that should fix your shutdown screen problem. Hope this helps! :)

Sorry noahawk, didn't see that you had posted same advice!

No problemo. The website I quoted said it better than I could, but your instructions seem so much easier to read... Oh well. :)

Thanks guys. Will check out the various solutions today. I am on MG using W98SE as I still can't get answers for my AOL/XP/modem problem. I have emailled various sites but none have bothered to reply as yet. Activation days are running down so will have to hurry. Thx again. Bazza

Your problem may be how you installed XP.
One of two things will work.

    Here's the simplest:
Device Manager >- Computer >- Expand >- Standard PC >- Right Click >- Update Driver >- Install from List... >- Dont search Let me Choose >- Choose Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC. You will need to reboot twice for the changes to be implemented..
(Choice might be "ACPI Uniprocessor PC")
If there was nothing other than Standard PC listed then see the other thing:

The other thing, In bios, when you installed windows, If the ACPI feature was disabled, you need to enable it, then reinstall windows.
As far as I know when this BIOS feature is disabled during install there is no way to enable it after the fact, except by windows reinstall.

bigbazza, you're not the only one with this. The same thing happens on this computer with XP Home. Now that I've seen how to fix it, I don't think it's worth the effort.

Novice and Noahawk provided 2 different solutions. I tried Novice's first as it appeared simpler. It worked and my laptop has moved from (19)W95 to 2005. Thanks to you both.

    Halo.
Yes I have seen this link. My trouble is I cannot identify the modem without pulling the laptop apart. Gateway says it is a Mini PCI Type 3B data Fax modem by 3Com. Model is 3CXMx56 where the little x is crucial. Unfortunately Gateway are not more explicit than that. And there are many models with a different number to substitute for the little x.

    EVEREST says 3Com Mini-PCI 56K V.90 modem.

Think I will download all versions of the little x, and try them out one by one. I am using AOL UK version 7.0 which is another complication. Also I have to flash the BIOS which I am chicken to do. Bazza
