This weekend family was over and I caught my 3 yr old nephew banging on my keyboard. When I caught him nothing was abnormal on the screen so I shut down the computer and left it off till tonight. NOW when I start it up it makes it to the desktop and then I get a black screen pop up just for a sec not long enough for me to see one word of what it says then is shuts me down.

I can log in to safe mode ran everything I could think off and no answers.
If I can see a word or 2 of what the message says I will post

    Thanks for any help

You might catch the message by pressing the Pause Break key on your keyboard.

Have you tryed advanced start up options, F8 key while booting?

Ok I went into safe mode and went to the event log and found this error which was each time I restarted so I think this is the problem but the fix???
    here it is

"The process Winlogon.exe has intiated the restart of HOME(name of my computer) for the following reason: No title could be found.

    Minor Reason :0xff

Dunno but I would like to hijack this thread because I have a 'dropoff' problem XP computer that does exactly that. All I have been able to determine so far is that it is not related to a corrupt password [this one IS password protected, with ONLY one user setup, so you know what that means], if I give a phony password it just sits there and says bascically, "not". If i give the RIGHT password it will die in about a millisecond: black screen.... can't see nothin' .

IS this Virus-like behaviour? this particular machine would be subject to a host of ills: its in a collegiate environ!

    I'm stumped for the moment

It sounds like it could be a potential backdoor if it's been initiated with a remote call. Are you running a firewall or any kind of virus protection software??

It may be a problem with Windows. Try having a look here; it may help.

I have both firewall and virus protection and have numerous other protections checks I do that I have read about on this site.

It was not on line when he was messing with it so I dont hink its a trojan or virus because I had restarted it right before they got there with no problems and then he got a hold of it and now this!

And something else is under safe mode I cant run System restore it goes right to the send error message and quits!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have "Last Known Good Configuration" or "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" as options?

    I have both choices

With Last Known Good Configuration it does the same thing!

I dont know anything about the Safe Mode with Command Prompt so I dont mess with it!!!!

I checked device manager under safe mode shows everything ok.

I checked for the worm I read about in the Reg setting with the WInlogon.exe file but It checked ok

So Im still at a loss

It's a long shot, but worth a try.

You may be able to use System Restore in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Reboot to Safe Mode with Command Prompt, type in the following press Enter, then follow the on-screen instructions.

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Thanks for the help guys I went into safe mode and took all of the checks out of the startup menu in msconfig and all is good. Now Im going to start narrowing it down tonight to see what caused it.

    Insomniac

My system restore still will not load at ll in any mode including regular start up so thats a new problem not worried about it just yet fix the other first.

    thanks again

So what are the symptoms/problems now if any?

Does the Event Viewer give any more info?

I just finished going back in aputting checks back in the ones I removed last night, I did it one at a time to try to find the one that was causing the problem and nothing still loads fine!

But now the only problem Im having now is with my System Restore feature it will not load in any mode I just keep getting an Error report to send the event viewer says for this....

Faulting application rstrui.exe ver 5.1.2600.2180 faulting module srrstr.dll version 5.1.2600.2180 fault address 0x00009826

    Any help would be appreciated

What is your computer's date set to?

If it's okay, try System File Checker.

Start, Run and type in sfc /scannow (Note there is a space after sfc )

You will need your Windows CD.

If none of the above work, go to the following folder,

    C:\windows\inf

In it there will be a file called sr.inf

    Right-click it, then install.

Reboot and see if System Restore is working or not.

My IQ drops 10 points every time I read your replies. You're "solutions" are pure zealotry. Please stop posting if you cannot provide assistance to the MATTER AT HAND. Simply stating "use linux" is next to useless in solving the problem and is not an acceptable answer. Further replies of this type will earn you a one way ticket.
