I installed xp pro. I did the upgrade so i wouldnt loose my programs. When i go to play an audio cd it says it cannot play because the sound device is not there. Here are a couple of things i found that its lookin for.
    drmk.sys
    wdmaud.drv
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
    MPU-401 Compatable MIDI Device

Anyone know where i can find thses things.
My sound is built into the motherboard and i use realtek audio.
    Thanks,

If you upgraded from Win9X, it's common for XP to stumble over drivers, and often the Windows default drivers are lousy.

If you can, uninstall ALL your Real-Tek related software and uninstall the drivers, reboot, and do a fresh install with the latest downloaded version designed for WinXP. Leftover Win9x drivers won't work in XP.

    Hi,
This is where the drivers are right. Would you know what to delete? Also notice the ones with the exclamation on them. those are the ones that i am having problems with.
    Thanks

Remove the 2 with the exclamation marks, and the Realtek AC97 Audio driver.

But before you do that, go into Add/Remove Programs and look for anything Realtek related. Control panel apps or whatever, and uninstall them first. Then remove the drivers from Device Manager, and reboot.

If Windows pops up the New Hardware wizard on reboot and wants to "help" you install drivers, cancel out of it. Then run the install program yourself. Ignore any warnings about the drivers not being approved by Windows; that's normal.

Ouch. Exactly what did you install, and where did you get it from? Nvidia's site or XFX's site?

Yeah, the latest from Nvidia should be the best one to use, but what file did you download? The latest combined driver for the motherboard (including sound) is
    "nForce 3.13 WINXP2K WHQL english.exe". That one is dated November 3, 2003.

Alright, based on your first image, it looks like you were running Widows "New Hardware Wizard, which you do NOT want to do. Windows always wants to help; sometimes it gets in the way. When the Wizard pops up, CANCEL it and just get to the desktop. Then run the nVidia install file all on its own.

Prob2.gif isn't a problem, Windows is just telling you it needs a file off of the Windows Installation Disk. Which still sounds like it's installing it's own lousy drivers, which don't work.

Back up and try it again, but without the New Hardware Wizard getting in the way.

    Hi thanks for the help.
That wizard pops up after i did everything. I installed the drivers from Nvidia and restarted. I did not use the windows hardware wizard. When the computer starts up in the lower right it says new hardware found and it pops up 3 times with 3 differnent new kinds of hardware.

So basicly i cancled the hardware wizard installed the drivers, rebooted, and now these come up.
    Thanks

That's not good news. So even with the latest proper drivers installed, Windows is not recognizing your hardware.

Only other thing I can think of would be to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install, rather than an upgrade. Which means you'd have to save all your personal stuff elsewhere and re-install all your programs. Lots of work, but a clean install is always more stable than upgrading.

Hold off a bit though, and see if any of the other guys have any better suggestions.

Ouch. What programs do you have that you'd have to re-purchase? Even with the best of care, at some point you may hit a disaster that will require starting over from scratch. You might consider contacting those companies and checking out availability of replacement disks, while your programs are still working, and serial numbers etc. can still be gotten from the programs to help prove you actually own the programs. Some companies will replace them for a nominal cost if you can prove your case.

    Hi,
Thank you for that bit of information. I recently learnd that i will not be able to copy the programs so it looks like i will have to call the companys in the next few days.
    Thank you so much
