XP SP2 freezes

i have a problem with my xp sp2 machine. for some reason it keeps on freezing, no error, no blue screen error or anything, just freezes.
i recently deleted the main account, as it was going to be used for a new user. but as the replacement computer wasn't ready, i used the transfer old settings wizard to restore the account. after this it was fine for about a week. then all of a sudden it started freezing all the time. i checked the connections inside and noticed that the primary and secondary hard drives were connected to the secondary IDE connections on the motherboard.
so i corrected the problem hoping it would sort out the system freezes, but still no joy.

could the wrong setup of the hard drives affect the stability now?

any suggestions would be great.
