Do you mean MSN Messenger? If you don't want this go to add and remove programs and look for Windows Live messenger and uninstall it.

Could you eleborate about the Outlook Express problems? Which version are you using and what is happening with it that you need help with?

    best of luck

Yes thats the messenger but its not anywhere to be found to uninstall :(

As for my OE it's OE6 and this is what it says when I sign on or try to retrieve mail:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.flyinghoovesfarm.com', Server: 'mail.flyinghoovesfarm.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

It has only done this since the update to SP3

I am afraid I will have to let others help you with the OE problem as I have absoultely no idea about that...with regards to the Windows Live Messenger...that you say suddenly appeared....how did this happen, can you explain more?

Well :-D since I am not very PC savvy when the PC says you have Microsoft updates to install I say ok go ahead. Choose the automatic selection and let it do its job.

I had several of these over a 2 day period, including the SP3, after the last voila! the messenger appeared. I cannot close it, it is not listed in add/remove nor is it listed in windows components.

    I don't know so I come to you :)

OK I realise the OE problem is what is more important at the moment...but i am now intrigued about this "messenger"...could you please upload a screenshot to us so we can see for ourselves what it's all about?

Press PRTSC > go to paint > edit > paste > and "save as" messenger.PNG

probably need to remove messenger from the "add\remove windows components" if it isn't in the std. add\remove programs

to elaborate, when you go to add\remove programs, look at the left hand column & select add\remove windows components & windows messenger should be in there

Re Outlook Express, look at the account settings for your mail.

Port might be wrong or Secure setting may not be right, you have to get this info form your ISPs site. (see bottom of linked page below for OE)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813514

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274456/en-us (nevermind the error just more info on how to get to your port settings if you need it)

If account settings don't help look at firewall settings.

Re: Messenger, Windows XP Messenger icon looks the same as Windows Live Messenger if I recall and confused me once until I looked at properties of icon.

is there an echo in here ??

btw, I believe OE is being fazed out in favor of the new "Windows Live Mail" in the near future, might want to look into it as well (also a free email client)

Ok finally found the messenger to uninstall. That doesn't tell me HOW it installed itself though. I sure didn't turn it on.

The OE settings are correct as per my mail server but still getting that message. :cry

How big a program is mail live??

it was installed with SP3, Live mail appears to be quite larger than OE, the program file for OE appears to be a tad over 4mb installed whereas Live Mail looks to be 19.6mb installed. I do prefer the new version (GUI wise) over OE

Download is 2.3 MB. If I recall correctly you have to download WLM unless you checked it prior from a windows update to install... just watch the boxes and only install what you want, no toolbar, messenger if you can uncheck them.

    http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

My size of Windows Live is 67.4 MB that includes all sub folders; installer, messenger, mail 19.6 MB, photo but I also have spaces and other add-ons installed I believe, sorry don't remember the exact downloads I checked.

If you have a space problem, might do some clean-up

Also did you check your firewall, think you might still have a problem with Windows Live Mail, but will wait and see.

:confused I checked the firewall, had my email server help me, nada nothing.
And it allllll happened after the SP3 download rolleyes

I guess I will try the new Live mail. If I have any problems I will be sure to post :-D

Thank you to all who helped me get rid of messenger it seems to be gone for good ;)
