Just completed a clean reinstall of XP Home Premium x86 on my old laptop before passing it on to a local charity. I've installed SP2 from a disk I have but am wondering now where is the best place to get SP3 and the remaining updates and anything else I should know about life with XP after end-of-life ;)

I've had a look there already Tim. The Windows Update link isn't working of course, and the standalone version says this -

This installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers downloading and installing on multiple computers on a network. If you're updating just one computer, please visit Windows Update at http://update.microsoft.com .

Will this version be OK for a single system? And there is still the question of the remaining updates post SP3 of course.

I've just found a note on Microsoft telling me that all updates are still available via WU. I hadn't even turned WU on, thinking it wouldn't work, so I'll see how that goes. Would still save a lot of time to get SP3 installed though.

Something I always use when I've had to re-install XP for the Security Updates is wsus offline update (version 9.2.1 is the last version that supports XP). I've also incorporated the registry dword for POSReady and for the last two months (May & June) have gotten XP updates (along with some for WEPOS and POSReady).

If the download file size is 316.4MB, it's the right SP3 download.

OK, I've got SP3 installed and it's now ploughing through 133 post-SP3 updates. I'll follow up your POS updates when that's all done. Thanks.

This must be some sort of record - 133 post-SP3 security updates in one run and no failures, but the last one was quite a surprise - the Malware Removal Tool for June 2014!

Makes you wonder just how dead XP really is :confused Clearly XP users need to keep automatic updating on as you never know!

I check my lone XP computer every month because they are still doing updates for Office 2007, which is installed on it, and also the malicious malware removal tool.
I only take it on the net to get the updates and off it goes again.
Keeping auto updating and and keeping XP on the internet is asking for trouble. Best to pull XP off the net and keep it vermin free.

You're quite right of course plodr, though now I've got it up and running I'll be handing it over to the charity and leaving them to decide how they want to use it.
