Hi Suddenly my computer hangs at start up when the windows sign comes up. It is when those blue dashes are moving across the screen.

If I switch off I get that black screen that offers different options but if I select Safe Mode, I get a lot of different things, like cmd dos thingys and then they stop and nothing happens.

If I shut it down again, it goes back to that black screen and if I select Start Normally it sometimes boots OK or I will need to shut down and repeat and then it starts.

    Any ideas??

    Hi

Safe Mode can take a while on XP to start and it seems like its hanging when its not, its loading drivers, so leave it for 10mins, should take no longer than that.

So its intermittent in booting, but when its booted its ok in usage?

Have you installed, updated any software before this happened? if so what?

    Could you follow the below

and as malware could be a cause follow this exactly as written, we just need an all clear from the folks in the malware forum area on your PC, to rule that out, but have you seen any weird popups or re-directs in your browser, or has your Antivirus software found malware at all in any of its scans.

Hi David GP sorry to have taken so long but my Dad was rushed to hospital and things are a bit hectic. I have attatched the CC Start up file. I had stopped a couple of things already but it didn't make any difference. Also I have been unable to use System Restore to get back to a different date. I tried in safe mode and it looked as if it was going to but then at the restart it said it couldnt.
I think the last thing installed was iObit Advanced Care System home user.

I have not seen any anything that Avast or Trojan Remover has picked up in their scans.

Sorry that there is not more to go on.

    Hi

Don't worry on taking so long, sorry to hear of your dad and hope things are ok now.

What I would try is to click Start > Run and type msconfig and hit enter, then click the Startup tab and disable everything, then reboot, is it any different?

This Trojan Remover can you link to where you downloaded it from as looking for it on the net, you'll appreciate that those words will bring up too many options to go through, I just wish to know about this app as some with names like that can be junk/fake and cause issues.

Even with Avast not finding anything, I wouldn't rule out malware as the cause, as not all Anti-virus scanning applications can find all malware these days as malware has become very sneaky! so do run the guide as listed above. BUT do set all the startups back to running in msconfig before you start the guide.
