Having setup XP in the course of helping in another thread, and as I don't atm have an XP system, I thought I might as well make a proper job of it and get it updated. Not as easy as I thought! My slipstreamed SP2 installation disk dates back to 2004, IE6, and so far I haven't succeeded in finding an SP3 download, most sites just failing to display because of IE6. Am I wasting my time? Even if I get SP3 are the post SP3 updates still available?

Yeah, already tried that. Not possible in IE6.

No joy there Eldon. I tried both IE8 links as that seemed the simplest route, but one is blacklisted on WOT and the other is for Vista 32 bit. I tried it but install was denied. I'll try the SP3 network install again but if that fails I'll give up.

Aaah - looks like the SP3 network installation package is installing after getting it from another computer. This should sort it - thanks!

What about the post SP3 updates, are they still available?

Don't know about that, but if you do the POS updates*, you'll be OK to get all updates. I do use Windows XP Professional SP3 but don't need updates or anything else. I don't connect to the internet with XP.

Do have a look at the link I posted. My Windows XP looks like Win7.

*I think plodr has more knowledge about this.

Thanks for the pointers! SP3 has installed so I should be able to take it from here. I know about the risks of going online with XP but I'm such a cautious browser I know where I can go and where not to go ;)

Seems that post SP3 updates are still available through WU, it's currently installing 132 of them - and that won't be the end of it either.

The updates will be available for up to and including 4/8/14. Anything beyond that, you'll need to incorporate the POSReady reg key announced on 5/25/14 on Major Geeks. I incorporated that key into XP Pro SP3 on that date and I've been receiving updates for IE8, XP (as POSReady 2009) and the Malicious Software Removal Tool ever since. I haven't run into any issues in XP Pro because of the reg key and like you, I know where I can surf safely although, I use FF as my default browser and only use IE to go to Microsoft Update on Patch Tuesdays.

I have not hacked my XP install, at all. There are malicious malware removal updates monthly update KB890830. I also have Office 2007 installed there so I get updates for that, if any are offered that month. Also I have MS Security Essentials installed and when I check for updated definitions, it updates. That will stop sometime in July, I think. I'm not sure of the exact date.

I fire XP up to check on things but rarely take it out on the web.

Thanks for all the tips guys - been getting some shuteye ;) Everything looks good this morning and you simply would not believe the speed at which MS updates install on a completely clean system - no AV, nothing added at all. 132 updates in 4 mins and one, IE8, took one minute of that.
