Can you tell us if the "programme icon" is actually a "shortcut" to the programme?

There is a distinction between a "Copy of the Programme's Executable File" and a "Shortcut To The Programme's Executable File".

Shortcuts are like pointers or 'directions' for the computer to move to the Home-Folder of a programme, and then run the programme from that location.

A Copy of the Progrmame File, on the other hand, says, "Try to run this one file from only the Startup Folder, without any of the programme's Home Folder supporting files."

It's a confusing but important distinction. It's almost like claiming to read a book by only reading its Table Of Contents - I might know the chapter titles, true, but all supporting data is left unread, unused.

(And even then, there may be some programmes that cannot be "loaded from Startup" - some programmes require other supporting services to be loaded first, in certain sequences.)

It was a copy of the programme file when it did not work.
Now i have put a shorcut file in the folder and restarted the pc.
Since putting the shortcut file on the start up folder i now see the icon by the clock.

Put the exe file of the particular program in the startup folder, which is a subfolder, in XP, of Start Menu/Programs of a particular user.

Yes, shortcuts properly 'point' the computer to the programme's originally-installed location, and let it run from there.

If a program puts a shortcut on the Desktop, that shortcut can be copied or moved to the Startup Folder.

As I noted before, not all programs can work with this technique. Some programs will only load 'on Startup' thru their own installation or configuration because they also require other computer services to start. If this "shortcut" didn't work, then I'd have suspected you were dealing with one of those trickier options.

I'm 99% sure that your program DOES now have a functioning shortcut in the startup folder and will start up every time Windows boots. Note, however, that some programs (including this one I suspect) start running while minimized to the system tray (near the clock). Some programs run only in the system tray (they have no associated taskbar icon while running). Some programs can be configured to run only in the system tray or only in the taskbar or run completely without any icons. Check the program's configurations/settings screen to adjust this behavior.

BTW, what program are we talking about here? (Name of the program)
