    Hello,
I have noticed some recent problems on my PC and have been here at MG's a lot! First off I want to thank everyone that has been assisting me. I not only have been helped a lot but also learned a thing or two.

Ok here is my problem. My PC boots up quick as always, very quick onto my desk top. But for like a mintue or a mintue and 15 seconds nothing goes for action. For example; I click on IE and its just a white page loading. Or I open my mail and there are no server responses during this 1-1.15 mins. This is very odd. This has been happening for only about 1 week. I also noticed that under task manager my processes have gone from about 36 to 40! Maybe something is connecting and takes up a lot of my memory at the beginning. I am not sure. Some guidance is appreciated. Thanks guys!!!!

    Hi :)
Well in the first instance you need to establish how many program's are running as if left unchecked there could be a lot. Best thing is go to start / run and type in msconfig then click on start up and this will highlight what is running you should remove all but essential programs like your firewall and anti virus

    Regards

Okay Nick this is what I found.

Under Startup I unclicked some HP printer stuff and adobe Gamma. There 4 other programs, but its a bunch of jargon and I don't feel comfortable unselecting them.

I restarted and everything is still the same. That 1 mintue delay of no responsive action. I did notice under msconfig in the GENERAL tab that selective startup is selected with a bunch of files/programs seleted, this normal?

    I did notice this.

    Total memory: 1790mb
    used: 396mb

what is used. The amount of memory it takes to run the computer?

    Hi TheBlackClap :)
Your memory seams to be OK. Well this time go in to msconfig and and tick the box disable all the computer will reboot and time it on the reboot till it gets to the desktop which should be about 45 seconds. The reason for disabling all is to rule out any software file glitch. Before you do this thou can you please defragment your hard drive so as that to can be ruled out. If things are the same then we will look at something else. Don't forget to go back into msconfig and tick normal startup before returning to the INTERNET the computer will reboot again and your software that you have selected at start up will be back up and running like your anti virus and firewall

    Yes it is

    Regards

It could be IE. I have that problem with IE. It sits there detecing proxy setting for a while then works. Try it on another browser and see if that is the case.

    Hi TheBlackClap :)
Well the next thing you will have to look at are your drivers and to make sure there are all current and up to date. I also hope you are using the service pack 2 as there are many benefits to be had by using it. I would also run a virus scan so that we can rule that out. Please let me know on how things are when you have made the necessary checks to make sure everything is updated

    Regards

    Hey Nick,
Yes all drivers and service pack 2 are loaded. Defrag/adware/ccleaner/nortanscan/and search and destroy have all been runned.

I have already been to maleware forums and been cleanered of any virus stuff. Is there anyway you could guide me with seeing what is running when I load up? I think that is the problem, something is taking up all my memory at the get go.

Please use Screen hunter which is very simple to use or In Windows, you have two options. Press the Print Screen (or PrtScn) key on your keyboard to copy the entire screen to the clipboard. Press Alt-Print Screen to copy only the active window. Next you'll need to open an image editor (Microsoft Paint, which comes with Windows, is fine if you don't plan on doing any fancy editing), create a new file, and select Paste from the Edit menu.
    Hope this helps :)

    Hi TheBlackClap :)
right click and delete all of these except your Norton anti virus and see how you go. We may have to look deeper in to why your system is stalling at the desktop so it may take some time. Your Norton anti virus in this list is titled symantec corporation. Don't forget to reboot the computer and to time it in seconds on when you can start to use IE and to get back on line. The target we are looking for is around 60 seconds

Ok Nick, I deleted everything but CC APP and Vptray. There is also a program at the top that I cut off. But it is a profile application that has to run in order for me to log on.

Nothing changed, same amount of time.

I look forward to your next recommendation. Again, thanks for the help!!!!

    Hi blackclap :)
Well this looks like it will be long drawn out. Can you please reboot your computer and come back to the desk top and open up task manager and take a sceenshot of the performance tag and post it here please as i need to do some calculations. Also if you have not already done a full anti virus and spy ware scan could you please do so and let me have the result's of the scans
    thank you

One more thing could you try a different browser like fire fox or opera
    thanks :)

Ok I booted up my PC and took a screen shot of the performance tab. I waited for the graph to go as far to the left as possible in order to show as much as I could. I would say this is about 15 seconds worth.

I am currently using Opera as my browser.

    Thanks Nick :)

    Hi TheBlackClap :)
Can you do another reboot as your processes in the task manager are a little on the high side at 34 we should really be looking at around the 30 mark
And post another screen shot please
    thanks

One additional thing to look into:

What about safemode, does it still take awhile to startup an app?

Try turning off your modem/router. Reboot the computer into normal mode. Does accessing any applications startup faster? The reason I ask this, it could be something that is accessing the internet at this time (though unlikely the culprit), just wanted to take this option out of the problem.

    Hello Nick,
Ok I find this interesting. After rebooting my system, I opened Opera up right away and it ran and was active. I then clicked my outlook express, but it continued the same ole' routine.

I find it interesting that Opera runs normal at start up but now. But IE or OE don't.

Maybe theefool is on to something. Maybe IE and OE are trying to access something at start up and wont respond until doing so.

We just need to find out what it eating up all the beginning parts!!!

    Hi TheBlackClap :)
I noticed that your memory were of different chips that can cause problems like you are experiencing. It would be wise to have them all the same either 4x 512MB or 3x 512Mb and of the same make and type. You can find out here exactly what type of memory you should have

    Hey Nick
I actually already took care of that. I had a really slow chip in there. I went out and got two new 512mb 3200 chips and installed and the freezing part is solved.

I don't think it would be a memory issue if Opera runns fine but not IE

    Hey Nick.

Yes and no. Opera opens fine right from the beginning. However IE and Outlook express still dont respond for the time we discussed. I may have to just deal with it.

This really is a minor thing, I am just happy knowing that Opera worked. I do appreciate your help in the matter Nick. Thanks and take care.

    Phew!
My eyes are a mite better at that fuzzy diagram you posted. As a first step why not take the 5 ticks out of the bottom entries - reboot and see if you get an improvement. Best to do this Off-Net since you are disabling Norton AV. If it loads faster without detriment to anything else then try again but click on nortan AV to be on the safe side. That means that the four unticked entries are the culprits and may be trying to phone home as you boot up

New problem. I started up my PC this morning and this time NO applications loaded for the entire time. IT was really slow going from the load to the desktop, then once at the desk top it sat for 30 or more seconds with nothing to click, just the desktop picture. Then once it does load up, it is super laggy for about 30 more seconds. I have changed NOTHING. I find this so dang odd. Help please.
