    Mmk.
i'm burning a few dvd's with nero - data dvd's with avi files on it. i play em in a portable dvd player then a/v out to my tv.

Problem: I get some sync problems after they've been burned.

Also my computer lags like hell when i'm burning - which leaves me incapable to do anything else.

However i didnt have this problem in ubuntu.
I used k3b and was able to burn a full 4.5gb dvd in ~13mins with no lag.
Went back to xp because i had some compatibility problems.

Is there really that much of a difference burning xp/ubuntu or am i doing something wrong.

    specs:
    3ghz dual core, 500gb WD sata 3gb/s, LiteOn dvdrw, radeon x1650 pci16, 3gb ram...

This is more-or-less normal with XP. Using the PC while the discs are burning has been known to cause playback issues. I think it has something to do with the the other tasks using resources which would otherwise be allocated to the burning process, and the data is written differently. I noticed similar results when I'd convert AVI files to DVD; when I used the PC during the conversion, the end result would have audio sync issues. Also, burning at slower speeds can help prevent sync issues. My home DVD player supports AVI/DivX playback, so I burn quite a few AVI files, and I have much better results when the files are burned slower speeds (8x on DVD; 16x on CD; never faster than 32x on CD). I use Nero 6.6.0.19b and AShampoo Burning Studio 6, the free version. It can be downloaded from here.
    .
I'm by no means any type of authority on Ubuntu, but I'm pretty sure it's much lighter on resources than XP, and this would explain the 'no lag' while burning.

well i'm only burning at 4x...

LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-812S, connected IDE, max speed is 4x, and thats.. 5540kb/s

aka effing long time to burn 4.4gb - feels longer when my pc is exceptionally inefficient for the time it's burning.

also: DVD high compatability mode :eek:n
    and SMART-BURN :eek:n

    2048kb buffer,
