I am trying to uninstall XP proffesional and its creating one big problem. have tried all the normal routes and all leads me back to Add/Remove in Control panel. Trouble is that it is not listed there so am at a loss. reason to remove is I am going back to Win ME as I can control what I want to do not XP. I am running

    Athlon 2100+ XP
    Jetway V266B Mobo
    VIA KTS66A Chipset
    128SDRAM
any offers as I am tearing me hair out. All guidance on Micro$oft is US and no uninstall from CD instalation disk/or floppy boot. Incidentally when i made a recovery disk it shows up as Windows ME. This is a first install on a new system.
    Thanks KJ

Before uninstalling why not add more memory,to cure your problems.
XP runs a lot better if you have 512 or more.Yours is at the minumum.Memory is fairly cheap rite now.

Im with him, I would not install with 128 megs. I also not only wouldnt run ME, but I certainly would never go back. Most agree its MS biggest joke to date. Also, having control makes no sense, you have control, perhaps you have not spent enough time learning a few new things with XP.

Im not sure if you installed OVER ME or not, which case you should be able to uninstall from add\remove programs, otherwise, theres no uninstall for a clean install, you need to wipe it out.

That said, its your PC. You need to format your hard drive and boot from the ME cd to install. I have not used ME in some time, try booting from the CD and see if it will let you format the drive before installing.

If not, and your drives are FAT32, you need your old boot floppy disk, boot from it, type format c: from the floppy, then boot from ME cd. Make sure you can boot from ME cd though. If you cant, from the same floppy disk, format and then type "sys a: c:" again from the floppy to make your hard drive bootable with CD drivers so you can run install from the CD.

    Good luck.

I'm not totally disagreeing, but I'm not really sure that the memory is that big an issue. I ran xp just fine with only 96 Meg of ram. I admit, upgrading to 256 DDRAM did improve the speed and all - but I would think that 128 would be enough to run XP.

I DO agree that going back to ME is exactly that - going backwards. If you feel you must, I would suggest 98 SE before ME. I know there is a big learning curve coming from a 9.x FAT OS into the XP world, but it really is well worth learning. Once you find the little ins and outs of XP, I think you'd find that you actually have more control over your computer.

The computer world never goes backwards (for the most part), and once you move forward in operating systems, remember that support for, and compatability with older OSes evaporate very quickly.

One quick note: If you can stick out the learning curve with XP, then you can find a ton of great help right here in the Major Geeks message boards. I've yet to ever see anyone get nasty or rude with any questions posted, and usually I see a quality response posted to any Inquiry within an hour or two.

The boot disk you create with XP defaults is only a very basic DOS boot disk (don't know why they even bother with it as an option). While you could copy ntldr, boot.ini, and ntdetect.com to the floppy - I think the CD is really the better boot option when you need it.

If ya must redo your pc however, you can boot with your emergency ME boot disk, and depending on the file system of the HD, either "format" and reinstall - or if need be "fdisk" and recreate a FAT 32 partition.

Best of luck in which ever way you go ... but

Ye point taken although I find that I cannot use the way I want to on a graphics programme I have, Photo plus4 I know its an old version but I am pretty adept with it now. I found out that the reason I cannot delete is that I never registered at the initial instalation time, have tried since but cannot as its telling me to log on when I am on Broadband???? Putting that aside I took the hint for more memory and purchased another 128 SDRAM, after instalation I couldn't boot up, zilch, nuffin. returned it to the reatiler who replaced it and same again. When I remove it and leave the single one /128 SDRAM PC133. its fine but on returning the other 128 SDRAM PC133 in bay 2 its a no go. I thought I'd give it one more try and it struggled to boot and when it finally did it stopped then started again and fully booted. When I turned off and rebooted Nuffin. Tried switching off at mains but still no go. This is a brand new build 7 days ago, any ideas please????

Are both Sticks made by the same company?

don't know where you bought new stick or how it was packaged and marked - but I ran into that problem once and found that I was trying to use one stick of SDRAM and one stick of DDRAM.

kinda like puttin Bush and Husain in a sandbox - they don't play well togeather.

kids at lots of local stores don't know the difference, and to be honest I didn't realize it mattered that much (just figured it would run at the lower speed). I'm a guessin that since you're being specific about it being SDRAM that this is not the case however. My point I guess is - are you sure what the store gave you is what you asked for?

Does either stick work by itsself? ... on one does not work at all?

Hi Toke, The Photoplus version you quote must be fairly old as I have used Photo Plus 6.0 for a couple of years at least.

It seems to work alright with XP but the big thing is It was FREE!!.
If you go to Serif it is possible that they will still let you download it for free as it is a teaser to get you to buy the later versions.

It would be worth a try just to go to their site anyway.

I started using XP with 96 megs of ram and it worked all right but a tad slow. I was using the Help and Support a lot and it was always slow in fact it is only a little faster now. LOL. I bought a new computer and have 512 DDR now. Peace Mal

hmmmm..... that post of mals made me think about something that I guess some take for granted.

Some older software that would run with Windows 95 or so just doesn't seem to work with win XP. Sometimes you can right click on the exe file, and tell it to 'pretend' that it's running in a different environment. If you right click on the exe in explorer, and pick properties, there is a compatability tab that lets you tell the program to pretend that it's running in another version of Windows.

Have run both sticks individualy and their fine put the 2 together and its a struggle, it did boot once after 2 or 3 tries and record 256 Ram at one stage then on reboot it refused totally. When I initialy purchased the second stick I returned to the retailer I had bought the whole com build kit from and took receipt as SDRAM was listed there, so as to minimise conflict. On looking at the labels on the sticks the only diference is the batch numbers one is 0315523 the other 0315304, would this cause the conflict ???? :(

    HI,

I read somewhere that if I wanted to reinstall XP Home I could save a file and then format my hard drive and reinstall XP and add this file to my windows folder and it would save me having to validate my XP again. I have messed up my reinstall of xp so i would like some info on how to do this,
    cheers, peteplum
