I have XP Pro. I've been getting a request for an update for about a month. I get this whenever I try to update it... both express and custom. I've also went to the website to install. I've tried it off and on 8-10 times.

Some Updates could not be installed
The following updates were not installed:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 service pack 1 and .NET and Framework 3.5 Family update for .Net versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

This is in a gray box w/ a blue header
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated :wave

    Hi

What Service Pack is your Windows XP at?

Try the full download updates from HERE and see if that helps.

Also post the error code you get when it fails to install as this can link to the cause, in some cases the cause is that the Indexing Service has been disabled, so check that you have not disabled Indexing, can find this in Services and then look for Indexing Service and make sure its started and startup type as automatic then reboot and try winupdate again.

Try turning off your antivirus application and try the update again, some antivirus applications can block some updates.

Last option off hand is to fully remove .net using the Cleanup tool HERE, then installing the above .Net package I linked too, then once installed reboot and try Windows update again

Pretty sure it's SP 2. I do some online gaming and was told not to go to SP3. That was months ago though. May be firne now? I did all you said with the exception of running the cleanup tool. I'm getting ready to try that. It's odd though. There was another framework update I missed... along with 2-3 other small updates. Everything installed fine except for the 2 frameworks?
    Thanks for your help:wave

I had some update problems because of Zone Alarm Firewall. Until they fixed it I would first go into Control Panel then the Firewall section and enable XP's firewall manually and then go back and exit the ZA firewall. After doing that I could get my updates and then when the PC restarted ZA would come back on and automatically turned XP's firewall off. Another time I discovered both Zone Alarm and the XP firewall were both active and that screwed things up until I turned XP's off again.

XP-SP2 is no longer a supported Windows version; in order to get continued support and updates from Microsoft, you should really update to SP3. Make sure your computer is free of malware before attempting to install a major Service Pack. Also read this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

Wow, I've never heard of that. I thought it was safe to disable the Indexing Service. Can you tell how or why that interferes??

    Thanks.

Ran the cleanup tool and reinstalled all the framework packs. That fixed it! Thanks for all the help/suggestions.... :wave

I think its safe to say you can leave your indexing service off. That suggestion made me giggle a little, I'll admit. I have turned the service off on every PC I have ever owned and have never had an issue.
