Okay, so this is my first post. Been using computers since the days of DOS (and actually, does anyone remember Xerox860 Word Processors?).

I'm having no problem downloading Microsoft XP and Office updates, but get the 0x80070643 error when I try to install them. I have 10 pending right now. Used the FAQ on the Microsoft web site, followed the steps there, and still can't install them.

The other issue I noticed is that when I go to Task Manager, I only get the the end-switch-new task window with a border and no tool bars (no way to close it). I don't have access to the other Task Manager functions either. I can shrink the box down manually, but have to close/log out to shut it down. When I right-click on the task bar, it does nothing.

    Thoughts, suggestions, etc.?

Also, since I retired from the Navy, I should be a Seaman Apprentice E-2 and not a Private E-2!

See if this fixes task manager ...if not would suggest a post in malware.

    Reinstalling Microsoft Task Manage
To reinstall the Microsoft Task Manager:

NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure.

    1. Click Start , click Run , and then type the following command:

    %systemroot%\inf

NOTE : There are no spaces at all in the preceding command line.

    2. Click OK to open the INF folder.
    3. Locate the file mstask.inf

Right-click the file, and then click Install . This will reinstall the files that Search needs to proceed normally.

You will be asked to place your windows XP cd rom in the drive.

Note# I have only tried on XP Pro

    HI!
Double click on any outside edge of task manager and it should return to normal view..happens a lot by accident.
Are you trying to install the updates at the Microsoft Update Site?

Okay, Toni, the Task Manager is fixed. I went the OSE route (step 1) but didn't go full cycle and reinstall. Will do that tomorrow to see if I can get it to work. Have to track down the disks. This does effect both XP and Office updates, so it's probably a corrupted OSE issue. Will keep the group posted on this.

    Thank you ~ j.

Okay, group, it appears that this is a good news/bad news story. I have Office XP Professional and the good news is that I installed the updates directly from the Microsoft website (download/run). Bad news is my auto update feature remains unresolved since I haven't copied over the OSE file yet (but does Office XP Professional have an OSE file).

Thanks to you all for the help ~ j.
