Just upgraded from 98SE to XP Home with SP2. CD-ROM drive not recognized. It is seen in BIOS and in device manager but with errors (yellow exclamation). I have tried known good working cd-rom drives but still same issue.

    Any ideas?

What model/brand is your CD-Drive? Assuming the computer is not nearly new, because it had an install of Windows 98SE on it, it may just be that the CD-Drive is not compatible with XP. You might want to see if updated drivers are available. Also, I think this article may be relevant:

    Not possible.

Windows has had native support for all optical drives since 95b, regardless of brand.

Also, there are no drivers available.

If it's driver related (unless it's a SCSI device), then it's the controller that is the culprit.

Zadig69, install the latest, XP compatible drivers for your motherboard, which will include controller drivers and that may help.

You could also try removing the controller and drive from Device Manager and rebooting and see if that fixes it.

Regardless, updated motherboard drivers are always a good idea, especially when doing an upgrade.

Although removing it from the Device Manager and rebooting should be tried as Insomniac suggested before performing any registry editing. Unless of course you're familiar and comfortable with doing so. =)

I don't dispute the registry entry works, and I have used the exact same thing on friend's machines with success and recommended it on numerous occassions.

However, installing CD drives is very simple and doesn't require any "extra" drivers. Windows has full support, unless it's a SCSI device or a DOS driver.

It's like installing a hard drive. You aren't required to supply any drivers, nor do the manufacturers.

Regardless, it's a good idea to make sure you are using the latest motherboard drivers, and then if that fails, by all means use the Registry hack.

Not having the correct drivers will always cause problems in the future and the latest drivers should always be used, whether or not there are any problems.

Thanks, I will try all the suggestions.

In response to what cd-rom I am using, after the originals did not work, I pulled a Benq from another XP machine that was working fine. Same thing, it is seen in BIOS and Device Manager, but with an exclamation point.

I will let you know how it goes.

    Thanks!!!

Double-check the jumper settings to make sure the CD drive isn't conflicting with the HD as master on the same cable. Win98 may not have cared (though it should have) and XP does.

Is this just a CD-ROM drive or is it a CD-R/RW type drive? A firmware upgrade might be required to enable XP compatibility.
