Alright, this is a freinds PC, so I'll do my best to relay what she told me.

    HP Laptop, XP-SP???

Everything worked fine yesterday. Today, when trying to boot, it gets as far as the Windows splash screen and then a message appears. Something about Parameters being reset, or something or other (I'm not familiar with this error, and she didn't write it down, so it's all that she could remember). After a few second, it reboots and continues to cycle like that, every time getting that same message.

I had her hit F8 and try "Last Known Good Configuration". That seemed to do something, but now she gets a new error that reads..."Return status indicates the value provided as current password is not correct" or something like that. I wasn't there, and she said the error just kind of flashes for a second or to. Then, same thing, it reboots and does it all over again.

I had her try to boot in Safe Mode, but that won't work either.

Is there a way to do a System Restore from a Command Prompt?

    Thanks, Steve

That depends if she got restore CD's with her HP laptop or if the restore is built into the hard drive.

If a CD, you can try booting, to see if you can do a repair.

If it is buiilt in, the only thing you can do is likely a non-destructive or a destructive recovery.

XP Home, I'd assume. I don't want to do a re-install of the OS, maybe as a last resort. I don't know what sort of discs she has that came with the Laptop. If there is a CD with which she can do a "repair", fine, otherwise like I said, I don't want to do a fresh install. Her CD's are at home, so I won't know what she has until later.

I was just wondering if these errors sounded familiar to anyone. I know it's a bit convoluted, and I expected people to say they "need more info", but thats all I could get for now.

    Thanks, Steve

The errors themselves ring no bell.

    evilevets,

Ask her if this is the error message:

    1st message
    lsass.exe - System Error
An invalid parameter has been given to a service or function

    2nd message
    lsass.exe - System error
when trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct

lsass.exe is a system process of the Microsoft Windows security mechanisms. It specifically deals with local security and login policies.

There is also a worm by that name but not sure if it generates those error messages.
lsass.exe also relates to the W32/Windang.worm which spread via floppy disk drives.

YES! That sounds exactly like the error message.

    So.....

What do I do? Sha has McAfee, but what if I can't even get into safe mode? Do any anitvirus companys make a downloadable boot floppy or something that I can use?

    Thanks, Steve

I am not sure which lsass.exe causes it. I think it is the Microsoft lsass.exe.
Let me give you the info and links I found and you can try and dertermine which to try first.

    Situation
When I start my computer I cannot log on to Windows XP. I may also receive the following error:

    "System error LSASS.EXE:
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct."

Then the system stops responding or reboots automatically. After the system reboots, I get the same error message. How can I log on to Windows XP without the error message?

    Details
This problem occurs if your computer is restarted during the Wizard, also called Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), that runs when you first turn on your computer. If this occurs, OOBE cannot flush part of the Windows registry before the computer is restarted.

    Solution
To resolve the issue, you have to restore your system completely with the Recovery CDs provided with your computer. Do not turn off the computer or restart it during the Wizard. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316134

You can try this method of repair it worked for some but not always, usually will just take you right back to the same process.

To repair windows, don't press 'r' for recovery console - instead press 'enter' to set up windows, 'F8' to accept the license agreement, then 'r' to repair windows.

Go here, http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_124252.htm for information on the W32/Windang.worm.
