    I Have an XP-SP2 laptop that won't see the network. It connects to the internet fine through the network, but can't access any of the computers. They don't show up in My Network Places. It can ping their IPs, they can ping it's IP. They can see it, but if I click on it it says it could not be accessed (error 0x80070035).
    The other computers are two Vista-Ultimates and a 98-SE. I'm almost certain that the problem is with the XP laptop, because when I view my router's page, which lists all thew devices connected, it says that 192.168.0.2 (the laptop's IP) has a device name "UNKNOWN". But actually the computer name is set as "WLAP".

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    (hope I was clear!)

    Erm, I tried to see if the network would work from the XP Laptop if I started it in safe mode. It got part-way into starting up then failed, and now the computer won't start in any mode at all. I get a blue screen with the following:

    Code:
    A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
    to your computer.

    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

    If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
    restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
    these steps:

    Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
    If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
    for any Windows updates you might need.

    If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
    or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
    If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
    your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then
    select Safe Mode.

    Help!

    Thanks a lot, it starts up now.
    Back to the original network problem: any ideas?

    Thanks, but unfortunately that didn't help. The XP laptop does now show up on the Vista computers' network maps, but if I try to click on it I still get the same problem.

    Try these out -

    Make sure you have tha same account/password on the comps.
    Double check firewall settings.
    Make sure File Sharing is enabled.
    Make sure NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled.
    Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

    * Computer Browser
    * DHCP Client
    * DNS Client
    * Network Location Awareness
    * Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    * Server
    * TCP/IP Netbios helper
    * Workstation

    Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.
    All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

    After that, maybe someone else has some suggestions. Hope this helps.
