:wave Well sir ... I was in the middle of trying to figure out how to do a new wireless connection because I kept losing it on my XP computer. While checking that out the computer locked up on me and I had to hit the reset button. Each time windows would lock up as it was starting to load up the system tray. Had no function from the wireless mouse or keyboard.

I tried to put in the XP install disk to try and do a repair but the disk would not load ... I got some kind of error. That led me to suspect hardware problem. I am doing a test on the WD 1TB hard drive ... all I have is the sea tool diagnostic DOS disk. I did a quick test and it pass. Now I am doing a long test. I tried to get a bootable cd version of WD diagnostic software, but I didn't see anything for a bootable cd ... just usb which I do not have.

So will the sea tool software be good enough to test the drive or is there better free software that will do it? If the hard drive passes, then I will use a dos version to test the memory. Not sure what to test after that if the memory test good. Any other suggestions are welcome.:confused

    Thanks for reading my post.

    Hi

The Bootable CD version is HERE, download the ISO and use ImgBurn to burn the ISO to CD/DVD, just in case you dont know about ISOs a small guide I did for something else but will work for you, just ignore the target file.

I think the part with "some kind of error" we would have loved to know the error message, if at all possible if you get error messages again either write them down or take a pic.

Is the XP PC you are working on now the same spec as the top one if your signature line? or has hardware changed at all, please tell us what has changed.

It may not be a hardware problem but software/driver, is Windows still on that HDD and if so have you tried to boot into safe mode?

Yes I am working on the computer in my sig. I installed a driver yesterday for a Kensington Multi display adapter .... it was doing fine for several hours.

I was able to get into safe mode once. I tried to run hot cpu tester, but it locked up. After that I am not able to get into safe mode at all .... I tried different options of safe mode but none worked.

I have the sea tool disk and ran it. The quick test stated the drive passed, but when I had it do a long test it claim I had to get the cmd prompt to find out the result which I can't do since I can't get the command prompt.

This is the first time I could not get long check results from sea tool ... I should not have to get to a cmd prompt to see the results.

I did a quick test of the memory too it checked out good.

What I need is to see how I can make a bootable cd with western digital software. Or any other bootable software I can use to test the hardware.

    Thanks for reading my post.

All of a sudden my mobo dies????:confused

Well if it is the mobo perhaps it isn't all of a sudden ... from time to time the computer would shut off for no reason. Didn't happen a lot, but it did happen and I didn't know what was up.

I checked and the mobo should still be under warranty ... the thing is I don't know how long it would take to replace it.

Would this board make it where I won't have to format the hhd?:confused

Thanks for reading my post :wave

I contracted Gigabyte on the phone and talked with a tech.

He told me to disconnect everything except the CPU ... and if it did not power up the mobo is bad. It didn't when I did all that so I requested a RMA as he instructed me to do if the computer still would not power up.

So that is what I did. They said it would take two business days for a RMA number.

So I guess the mobo when bad on me:cry

Would the board I posted a link to work with a FX 8120? Looks like it is for the FX 8320.:confused

Well sir ... I'm very discouraged and upset ... install the new mobo and the same results ... no power . I was afraid this would happen.:cry

I'll take everything out and start one at a time. I'm taking a break right now, because I'm pretty upset. Going to wait a bit until I calm back down. I will report my results when done.

Replace the power cable from the PSU to the socket outlet. And check the socket outlet.

Well this is rather embarrassing :-o I didn't have the power switch on the case hooked up to the motherboard. rolleyes It will power up, but I get no video and the sound from the power supply isn't stable. The rpm in the fans speed up and slow down ... I guess it's the fans can't tell by looking at them.

I hooked up a different power supply and same thing.:cry So the good news is the mobo will power up ... the bad news is I can't get to the bios or any image on the screen. I did check my connections again too. It's like it's not regulating the power or something.

Oh and one other thing ... no system beeps at all.:zzz

    Update ....

I took out the video card and the fluctuating sound stopped but I still don't get a system beep or video. I hooked up the video into the motherboard, but still no video or boot up. I removed the memory sticks too ... no system beep at all.

Well sir ... I got it to boot up I pulled the battery to reset the CMOS and I checked to make sure the CPU was properly seated ... also I made sure the memory sticks were in the correct slots. Once that worked I hooked up the video card ... that worked too.

I'm going to work in the BIOS. It won't boot into windows so I will have to format the drive and start again. I guess I need to install the drivers for the mobo.

I will probably go with XP 64 bit OS. I really like XP and don't want to get rid of it ... at least on my secondary machine I don't.

Will let you guys know how things turn out. :wave

    Problem solved

Well sir ... seeing how XP is installed and I'm on my way to installing everything again I will mark the original problem as solved.

Symptoms: No power at all ... brick

Diagnosis: Hooking up new P/S produce no change. Checked power switch on case by shorting leds to mobo no change ... still no power. Removed all devices except for CPU still no power. Conclusion bad motherboard.

Solution: Replace Mobo. See earlier post for link showing new board.

Thanks for reading my post. :wave
