XP won't finish loading

Hi
I have been using Windows Xp for about 6 months. All of a sudden it hangs right at the Windows XP screen where the blue line goes across the screen just before windows starts. It just stays there--forever. I'm wondering if my CD-Rom drive died or something like that. I tried reloading XP with the 6 startup disks and it won't let me read the windows xp disk in the cd-rom drive to finish. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

First enter the Bios and check that it can see your CDROM.... if it cannot then check the IDE cables.. even if you have to unplug them and plug it in again.

if it still will not read your CDROM ... if you have a spare oone or can borrow one then try that also... it will help in narrowing down whats wrong.

also just before this happened did you install any new hardware, software or drivers?

each Bios is slightly different but generally the info you need is in Standard CMOS Settings and listed as........

IDE Primary Master XXXXXXXX
IDE Primary Slave XXXXXXXX
IDE Secondary Master XXXXXXXX
IDE Secondary Slave XXXXXXXX

where XXXXXXXXX is the name of your CDROM or Hard Drive

you will be looking for the name of your CDROM drive eg. LITEON DVDRW SHOW-812S

When I checked the Bios there is a name in the Primary Master and Secondary Master but nothing in either slave. Is this the way it should be?

Please post what it says for Secondary Master.
