XP won't reboot, goes to logo, then reboots

Yesterday, I found my computer rebooting, going to page that saids that was a "windows start - up problem" gives the options of Safe Mode or Choose Windows to start up normally. Then goes to the Windows Logo as if it is booting - up only to flash a "blue" error screen for 1/2 second then displays "NO SYNC" on a blank screen then reboots again. This cycle just keeps repeating itself over and over again.

Has anyone seen this? What can I do to fix this?

Is the monitor plugged in tight?
Is the video card dislodged?
Is the monitor getting power and turned on?

If those are fine, and assuming you don't hear any beeps when you boot up, try selecting the "Last Known Good Configuration" option, which may undo what was done to it, and caused the problem.

Did anything happen right before you got this error? Install software? Open the case? Add/Remove Software?

 

See if you can boot in 'Safe Mode' and then trying lower the refresh rate and/or screen resolution in the Display Properties section in the Control Panel.
See if you can lower the resolution to 800x600 at 16bit color and at 65Hz refresh rate....these are very low values but just for the sake of narrowing down the problem try that, after changing the settings reboot in normal mode and see what happens....

 

Actually after re-reading this, obviously his monitor is powered on, duh.

But I still think Last Known Good Configuration should be his first option. LNGC is tailor made for problems like this. When Windows won't boot into regular mode, LNGC is surprisingly effective in my experience, undoing what caused the problem. And it's so easy too.

 

Yes, tried Safe Mode, and Reboot to last Known Configuration, but still goes to Windows Logo then flashes blue screen for a nano second then "No Sync" on monitor then reboots.

This happened in the middle of the night, there was no movement of cards, software or anything...just happended!

Can't boot into Safe Mode, huh? Could be alot of things. First, do you have a spare monitor around to isolate the monitor? Second, do you have the Ultimate Boot CD? It runs memory tests, hard drive tests, etc, all from CD. Any boot cds for diagnostics around, I should have asked. Third, any chance there was a power surge or something in the middle of that night to cause hardware damage?

 

It's not the monitor. I just had dealt with this problem on my friends computer. She had a few viruses and worms on her computer and I think that's what caused it.

First, try booting from you windows CD. Second, select the repair function. I think it tells you to press R after is does all of it's loading up. It will ask you what you want to load onto. Just press 1. It'll ask you for your password. If you have one enter it, if not just press enter. Now type in chkdsk /r

This will check to see if your system files can be repaired or not. My friends couldn't. Hope yours can. If it repairs it that great! If not, do the ultimate boot thing that Farbib suggests.

 

Will try the window CD. I think I also know someone who has the diagnostic CD. Will let you know how that goes.

had the somewhat same problum but my friends computer would keep going thru scan disk, the only way to fix it was with a system recovery disk that came with the DELL computer, it put her computer back to when she first got it and had to load some optional programs but all works well now
