I just got a used Dell inspiron 5100 laptop with Xp home edition on it.
I've been using windows ME for so long so I have a few questions about XP.

The name that comes up for the computer is the original owner,not the windows log on but the name when you run an Everest report.Can this be changed?

I noticed that when I do msconfig to see whats running in startup I can't tell what alot of the stuff is.What should stay checked?Also when I run CWshedder I keep getting found CWS.msconfig, Not sure what this is as it keeps showing up everytime I run CwSHEDDER.Any help would be appreciated.

 

for start up info a good site is... http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php you can search each app and see if its good/bad/needed/etc.

The Name can be changed in the Registry, Start-> Run-> type regedit to get in, sorry I'm not exactly where once you're in.

 

Found it, once in under Find search for RegOwner... it should find it and you can change it by double clicking it.

When you run CWShredder...are you telling to scan, or are you hitting the "Fix" button on the bottom right side of the window?? Make sure you are clicking on the "Fix" button, and it should remove that CWS.Msconfig that keeps popping up!!

That is a nasty variant of the CWS stuff!! You might have to seek guidance over at the "Spyware Specific" forum...in order to successfully and 100% remove it!! They are scary smart and will be able to help you with that!!
