    Hi all

I've had an Xpress Hi-Speed portable hard drive for some time, unfortunately by the time I had stored about 4 to 6Gb of material on my drive, it was well past the warranty period, the drive should hold around 100Gb's, problem is when it reaches around say 4 to 6 Gb's it just freezes up or slows down almost to a full stop, each time I've managed to get the info off it and format the drive, I have also ran disk check to no avail, just wondering if anyone can tell me what might be causing this, hopefully not just another faulty hard drive.

    Regards

    Pozzy

Here's some diagnostic tools you can run to see what's up with the drive. Load it up with some data that you already have saved elsewhere (just in case ;) ) and run one (or two or more) of these tests:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hard_Drive_Inspector_d4966.html (30 day trial)
These are all Windows based, so you don't have to boot to anything. The last one is a trial, the others are freeware. I hope this helps! ;)

Are the files you are trying to store 4GB and larger? Most external hard drives sold are formatted FAT32 so they will be compatible with windows, linux and Mac OSX. FAT32 has a file limit of 4GB. If you try and transfer anything close to that size, you will have a failure. If your files are large, use a file splitter to break them into smaller parts then you can safely transfer them.

First off, a thank you to dlb, will give them a try.

Hi plodr, no all files are small, the sum total is around 4 - 6Gb's, will be trying out the diagnostic tools first, suggested by dlb, if no good will post again.

    Hi DLB

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier, I work overseas and have since went back to work, it takes a little while to get up to speed, so I tried all of those tests you sent me, they did not indicate any issues with the pocket drive, that is nothing that I understood, however I must thank you as I think two of the programs did indicate that my main hard drive was starting to cook, thats now been fixed, so you have helped me out enormously, I changed out the fan and gave the casing a thorough cleaning, full of dust and fluff, so once again thank you, as for the 100 Gb pocket drive, I think I will just use it until it packs in for good, I'll make use of the 6 Gb capacity it is giving me.

    Regards

    Pozzy
