    Hi,

Trying to install Xubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" - Release i386 from an ISO I downloaded and burned to CD, but having no luck.

I chose this version of Linux because I understand it will run on a low spec computer... like mine:

    Compaq Presario 7480
    AMD K6-2 550 mhz
    Ram 183 SDRAM
    3X IDE HDs 2X20GB and 1X30GB
    Win98SE on the boot drive

The start or install menu comes up fine, but once selected then one of three things happens... none of which are good!:
    1) Computer reboots
    2) Xubuntu splash screen then udevd-event[2102]: run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit
    then either
    i) squashfs: version 3.2 -UBUNTU (2007/07/26) Phillip Lougher
then begins to laod drivers and hangs
    OR
    ii)loads BusyBox

Any ideas about where to from here?

The CD is fine as I ran it on a more modern comp and it works.

    Thanks in advance

    Dins

    _dinsdale_ , Welcome to MajorGeeks.

-may be of quicker help for your exact error. Sounds like the Linux install could not find all your hardware.

Or you could have a bad CD burned.

you can get a CD for free if you are willing to wait a few weeks.

Thanks for the welcome but I've been here for a while... though not to this particular forum.

The CD is fine... I tried it on another machine.

Tried your link but it's a bit overwhelming.

    Cheers

My advice, try another distro. You have to use a distro that likes the hardware you have. Ubuntu apparently doesn't like your hardware.

plodr, you are a puppy fan if I am correct.

    What would you recommend? ;)

Not a Gnome or KDE canditate for sure and XFCE or Fluxbox is toward the right direction.

_dinsdale_, it was not my point to overwhelm you. I know Ubuntu, but not Xubuntu installs.

Try PCLinuxOS. It's pretty good with hardware detection and compatibility. I ran it on an old PC with comparable specs. The main distro is KDE based, but there also XFCE, Fluxbox, and Gnome desktops versions available and TinyMe, a bare essential version.

Actually, I'm a fan of PCLinux but that distro has been stuck at version 2007. Texstar was ill this year, followed by the hurricane, Ike, which hit the area he lives in. I suspect that 2008 will be a year of no new distro.

I've run Simply MEPIS, PCLinux, Vector Linux as installs on various computers. I briefly ran puppy as a live CD but it would save settings in a folder in windows.

The earlier versions of Vector Linux (Icevm) runs very well on old hardware. I have it installed on a celeron 533MHz with 192MB RAM. I'm not sure if there is any place to download earlier versions of it though. http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux...linux/docs/miscellaneous/version_table_2.html

I always tell a perspective new linux user to try live CDs first. See what distros like the computer before you attempt to install anything. http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

Thanks for all the input. I found Dam Small Linux DSL which runs well off a live CD so pressing on with this as a full install... which me luck;)
