I'm not sure if this is right forum for this, but here we go: Are XVid and Divx more or less the same? I'm shopping for a new home DVD player, and I want both Divx and Xvid support, but VERY few list Xvid as a supported format, while there's quite a few in my price range that support Divx playback. If they support Divx playback, will they also play Xvid files? Any help or feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanx!!!

They both use the MPEG-4 ASP compression.

for the most part, yes. I bought an Oppo upscaling HDMI dvd player with DivX support a couple years ago for my dad, and didnt run into many issues playing xvid, but keep in mind that Oppo releases many firmware upgrades which may fix issues. Look for good reviews of your player on AVSforum.com :)

Hopperdave, don't have one myself but here is an answer from another site that I frequent.

Another bit of trivia Xvid is Divx spelled backwards. It's a free version of Divx created by some techies.
