Was able to play Yahoo! Checkers through the Yahoo! Instant Messenger a few times. I noticed it uses Java to run the checker game.

    I am using Win 7 Home 64-bit.

Recently, the game will not load up stating a syntax error has occurred but no other information to lead on for a search for a cure.

I like having the option of passing time with the extra game time with others. Can anyone help?

I have reinstalled or installed: Java, Flash Player, and Shockwave via Web site they are offered.

    Greetings, Break_Da.

You might try dumping all of your temp internet files, even running CCleaner to get rid of any index.dat files.

Quite often, syntax errors are programming related - it's possible that the software has been updated behind the scenes, and there may be mistakes in the new code.

run ccleaner a lot... at first I had the same thoughts, run the cleaner and see what happens. it did work the first few but then the syntax error still occurs

reinstalled Java, flash, and shockwave... didn't seem to fix anything
still can't play the over IM game

If you are certain you have the most current version of Java, if your IM buddy does not have the appropriate version, the problem could be with your IM buddy. I have played Yahoo msngr games before, they are Java dependent, and while never getting a syntax error, I have simply had the games not work because the person on the other end did not have their software set up properly.
Not sure if this helps you or not, but thought I'd put it out there .

We both have version 10.0.0.1270us for Yahoo! IM.
Both Java versions are up to date also, although this morning I see a Java Update waiting in the notification area.

*one machine is XP Home other is Win7 Home*

All I can think of is trying a reinstall of yahoo msngr . If that doesn't help, we need someone with more knowledge to help you. Sorry I couldn't help - I tried

Not familiar with the games. :(

Maybe internet related? Could be tough to troubleshoot, since there are (at least) two machines involved, but you might look at any firewall exclusions, temp. disable any antivirus scanners, check Internet Options permissions, etc.

What browser are you using ?
If I were you, I would use Ccleaner again to uninstall the java version you have (again) and re-install AFTER REMOVING ALL VESTIGES OF THE VERSION YOU UNINSTALLED WITH CCLEANER including registry . I downloaded my java from the following link, and have no problems with it at all - I am also running windows 7 64 bit .

    http://www.java.com/en/download/

I'm not certain how IE uses plugins or handles java, but if you are using Firefox like I am that download SHOULD take care of your problem. If you have already done this, please disregard and wait for advice from someone more experienced than I . Although we HAVE taken away the possibility of the problem lying with Yahoo msngr .

    -just trying to help .

    UPDATE:

Have found the reason behind the syntax error (error given due to software unable to be computed).

Win7 64-bit OS has two Internet Explorer versions, 32-bit and 64-bit. When downloading the software running in conjunction with both bit versions both versions of Java 32-bit and 64-bit will need to be installed as seen when viewing the 'all Java downloads here' link on the download page from Java.

here is the same link above without hyperlink:

Thank you everyone, I am very hopeful for this remedy (admitting it is not tested via Yahoo! IM but another online game dependent on Java which has worked)
