I have win2000 professional, pentium 3, 256 memory, just installed new memory today and go to yahoo mail, sign in, page starts to load and thats it. Total lockup. so I can't get my mail, the kids can't get theirs. We use messenger and that is fine. Any ideas? My next reboot could be me booting the pc going out the window! Thanks. Oh the yahoo mail was freezing before, thats why I thought it might be bad memory, also can access it from others pcs. :(

Right, I guess I can give that a try, sooo if I do this, do I just use the ie6 setup from my ie folder or should I download a new one from Microsoft? Should I uninstall ie6 first? (Please say no, I have all my favorites and so on and the export/import etc is a pain). I have Symnatec anti-virus, should I disable that first. Sorry for all the questions but I would like to hopefully get this right this time! Thanks for the help. :)

Ha! Jeez, I have been away far too long (17 years) and am way too Americanized! Yes, we used to drink "Steinies", I preferred "green" over the "blue", less of a headache the next day!!! Wicked strong tho', Not sure if I could even manage half now!! Anyway, tried the repair and after the reboot tried logging in and FREEZE. Grrr, anyway, what about removing yahoo companion, messenger and other components from Add/Remove and reinstalling? Anyone had any luck with that? I use myway for my email now (without the Toolbar!!) and have never had a problem so I don't think it's security or anything.

okay, I've downloaded it but have yet to install it, will do that in a minute, actually looks like a pretty neat browser. No other pc's connected, we have linksys 8.02 wireless, hope its not that. Didn't uninstall any of the yahoo stuff, but did download and used reg supreme, jeez lots of junk even after doing other uninstalls. Did I mention that we do get occasional freezes on other internet sites, but I have heard that that is a windows problem! What???? BTW, thanks for the patient help.

Yes, I have automatic updates and about a month again did a complete reinstall to new folder of win 2000, office 2000 etc, at the time could access y.mail fine then bam, no more. Have updates for all the above, I think, mind you microsoft.com is good at freezing too :)

Hi, sorry, life gets in the way!!! Um, we have a neighbour who does computer set up and stuff and is starting an access business from his home, we are rural and can't get anything except dial-up otherwise, so we have a dish on our house that points to his so I don't know if that counts as an ISP or not although we do pay! Did I put that yahoo froze with the new browser too? I still wonder if removing all the yahoo stuff and redownloading would help. BTW, can't ask neighbour for help on this , can't afford his hourly rates!!!!

could it be an irq problem?

Happy New Year to you all. A new year and still freezing and I don't mean the weather. I was wondering if it could be this that I have copied from Device Manager today: IRQ Summary:
    (ISA) 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
(PCI) 9 RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2x
(PCI) 9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
(PCI) 9 Instant Wireless PCI Card V2.7
Now I'm not sure but I thought that there shouldn't be this many things sharing an interrupt? If I check they all say device is working properly or no conflict, but...
I remember a long time ago with another pc that there was a conflict between the mouse and the modem both using Interrupt 11. If this could be the case how will I change/fix it? Thank you.

negatory. that is acpi by design, so long as pci only devices share.

    ok,
IRQ 9 is the standard junction IRQ.. pretty much everything goes through that in Win2k.. so don't sweat that.

Avant is an IE overlay which means that it uses the IE engine and if you're having problems with IE, chances are it will happen with Avant too..

Can I suggest you try Opera (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=559) and let us know if that works.. just for a test. If it works, then we know something is up specifically with IE.

Thankyou , I will uninstall avant

My first thanks was to Adrenelyne, (Hope that's spelled right), so now I will try Opera. also the freeze did happen with avant as well. nice looking browser though (not that I'm shallow or anything)

I have one question though, it says "opera without java", will that mean some stuff won't display properly? I'll give it a try. I have noticed that ie freezes more on graphics laden pages. i also took the advice I saw on another thread and disabled "third party browser extensions".

java is not the same as javascript. Opera without java does not contain the Java Virtual machine that is used to load and run java applets.

Oh, right, thanks...see you learn something new everyday and if you don't you're probably dead!

    Thank you!

It worked! At 99% of my message box too, was able to read, delete and everything, no problems at all! So I guess there is a problem with IE6. The repair ie in control panel didn't work, well it did, but said nothing was wrong. Interesting. Well I guess if I can't fix it,(much as I'd like to), I can stay with Opera, don't seem to have much viewing space though. Thanks again, I will let you know if it keeps working!
