My daughter has a new computer running windows xp, she is on a wireless hookup to DSL. She has her correct username and password to login to her Yahoo messenger, but it will not connect. She is using a linksys router which is hooked to her desktop. We tried changing from no proxies to firewall with no proxies, to no network detection, but none of them worked. Any ideas on what to try next? We appreciate any help.

what is the exact message? can she get to the internet at all (ie. internet explorer)? what firewall are you running (windows, zone alarm)? is she the owner/admin (or just a user)? have you tried disabling the firewall and seeing if that works?

She can get on her browser, check her mail etc... She is the administrator, we shut her firewall (norton's) off when trying to connect. She does not get an error message, it just keeps trying to connect.

did it work before? is your windows firewall disabled as well? control panel --> windows firewall (check settings there). is it possible that it was/is down? you say you have dsl, is it sbc? is that software (yahoo messenger) part of the sbc browser software (bundled)? has she tried installing a different version from yahoo? also, does she have (norton) parental controls bundled with the firewall? - sos

She just downloaded it onto this new computer. We know it worked on her old computer. She had to download it, then uninstall the toolbar and extras that came with it. We uninstalled it and re-installed it to see if that would take care of it. I am in NY and she is in KY, so I am trying to help her over the phone. I know when I was there I had the firewall shut off, and I will have her check to see if it somehow got turned back on. Yahoo messenger was not down when she was trying to get onto it, I had mine on and it was connected. She is on bellsouth dsl light, I have no idea what sbc is, I'm on roadrunner cable. I appreciate your help, hopefully we can get this working, she uses it when her husband is in Iraq, and he is heading there again soon.
