I have just attempted to uninstall all 3 of these programs and they all leave Folders with files in them. I am still trying to get a Messenger type program that works for me.

    Using W98SE.
YAHOO v7 BETA--too much of a resource hog
Trilliam--less of a resource hog, but slows down my access to MG forums.
GAIM--can't get it to work for me.

I am going to delete remaining folders and files for each, then run a registry cleaner, or two, and try to install GAIM again.

Wish me luck. Any thoughts/suggestions/ribald comments are welcomed. Bazza

Which GAIM installer are you using, gaim-1.3.1.exe or gaim-1.3.1-no-gtk.exe?

If you are using the no-gtk then you will need to install GTK+ for GAIM to work.

Thanks, S_P_D, I'm using gaim-1.3.1 but am obviously doing something wrong. Will try again after I logoff from MG. Bazza

Just tried to reinstall GAIM. Error 1157 came up relating to "Error loading GAIM.DLL". I used all defaults when installing GAIM so don't understand how error occurred. Will do a google search for error in the meantime, but if you have any answers I would appreciate them. Bazza

gaim.dll should be in C:\Program Files\Gaim. I think GTK+ may be causing the error. Unistall GTK+ using Add/Remove Programs, then install GTK+ using the standalone installer.

    gtk-runtime-2.6.7-rev-a.exe

S_P_D, I can't find any reference to GTK+ using Add/Remove programs. GAIM did work once or twice but then stopped working, reporting Error 1157. I tried to join sourceforge.net to ask a question about Error 1157 but it was so useless that I have asked them to close my enrolment to their site.

Should I just run gtk-runtime-2.6.7-rev-a.exe as GTK+ does not appear to have been installed? Bazza

If GTK+ isn't in the Add/Remove Programs list then it didn't install. Go ahead and run the standalone installer.

    S_P_D.

Downloaded and installed GTK+ as per your link.
As I was installing it, it said it was already installed !! Beats the hell outta me !!
It hadn't shown up in Add/Remove, though.
Anyhow, reinstalled it again and it now works.
Thanks again, will try it out tomorrow, early in the morning OZ time, trying to contact buddies in Africa and the UK.

    Good deal.

If you want a spell checker for GAIM, checkout GNU Aspell. Make sure to DL the binary and precompiled dictionary.

Thanks NICK, I'm gonna try GAIM for a while. It appears to be easy on resources and does not interfere with MG forum posts, so far. I have noted your link, however, if GAIM is not to my liking. Will get one eventually that I like and likes my PC, thanks to MG members Halo, S_P_D and yourself, in particular, re this problem.

Didn't mean to cut and paste all of S_P_D's reply, above. Sorry.

S_P_D, thanks for the spell checker. I am a good speller but a rotten typist so this will help. Bazza

    Thanks, S_P_D.
Did as you suggested and d/loaded them all.
On W98SE. They installed OK and picked up my spelling/typing mistakes.
GAIM is certainly easier on resources than Yahoo v7 Beta, and it works with MG forums.
Not slowing the access time down like Trillian does.

Looks like a "KEEPER" for me. Bazza

As a follow up on the above 3 programs. I loaded Process Explorer up

    (Process Explorer v 9.12 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4566)

to check out continuous hard drive activity, :p what processes are running, and slowed down access on my laptop. It appears as though vsmon.exe (ex Zone Alarm) was hogging most of the CPU activity.:p

A quick check on google showed it might have been a "nasty", masquerading as Zone Alarm's program (vsmon.exe is one of theirs). Further research appears to show that my vsmon.exe is the genuine ZA one  , but the PC still slows down. I unloaded ZA (while on the net--risky I know) and reloaded it straight away. HD activity and CPU usage is back to normal. Will have to keep an eye on over the next few days. Bazza

I would keep an eye on that, ZA should not take up the processor. Could have be a nasty masquerading as vsmon as you suspected.

S_P_D, whatever it was, it seems to have gone now. I keep Process Control minimised and there is a little icon next to the M$ clock where I can keep an eye on it. I also sort the display to CPU use sequence. I sized the display area, so that only the top 4-5 CPU hogs display, if I want to get more info. CPU idle is around 70-90 reading most of the time now. Before, vsmon.exe was around 80-90 and hogging all the action. Bazza

    Update.

I had removed Yahoo v7 beta as too much of a hog. I tried GAIM, but recently it decided to quit working for no apparent reason. I have now uninstalled it and re-installed Trillian. It starts off as a "hog", like all programs, until it is fully loaded then shrinks down to less than 1%. (cpu use).

Only thing I would like to change is to increase the typing area from 1 line to 2-4 lines. Anyone know if this is possible? Bazza

Just underneath where the sent messages appear (um, the chat window thingy?), there is a line seperating it from the formatting buttons, like text size and such. If you take your mouse at the bottom of the chat window thingy, you should get a resizing double sided arrow. Drag away for an adequate size.

Also, somehow I double clicked somewhere yesterday and the text entry and messages sent/received box got equal sized, but they were side by side, filling up my monitor... Can't repeat it right now for some reason... :D

Thanks noahawk. :) Using your hint, I have been able to increase both windows to whatever size I like. Haven't tried to get both side by side yet. Bazza

No problemo... I still can't replicate getting them side-by-side with just double clicking somewhere... Ah well, I didn't like the way it looked then anyway :D

Now my problem is getting to chat to a lady in West Africa.:) 10 hour time difference !! :p
But that ain't a messenger problem.:D Trillian is working fine. Bazza

    Good to hear.

Now maybe if you got up 5 hours earlier and she stayed up 5 hours later??? :D

Unfortunately she lives in a third world country where even electricity is not guaranteed 24 hours a day. Internet access is relatively expensive, per hour. I have tried to get her to specify a time when she will be on-line, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Ah, I knew it had to be more of an issue than it sounded. Best of luck in trying to get her online at the same time.

Hell, you can't even get electricity supply guaranteed in the capital for 12 hours a day. Can't even get the garbage cleared away in the capital. Still it is a beautiful country and I would be back there tomorrow if my job I am hoping for, comes up. Baz

Wow. Sounds like a great countryside right now, but every country has its struggles. I guess we are really lucky our countries' struggles with such things are mostly past.
