Yahoo Widgets (???)

I've started messing around around w/ Yahoo widgets and would like to get into programming one. Yahoo provides a 'converter' that will supposedly convert your newly written code into a usuable 'widget'. The problem is that this converter NEVER works! I've checked with the Yahoo widget forums and it appears that some people have the same problem I have, while most say the converter works fine (if it didn't, there wouldn't be 3000+ widgets available for download! ). Anyhow, the Yahoo forums have been little help and Yahoo themselves has been no help: just emailing me a 'mass mailing' directing me to the forums. I've tried using an older version of the converter but it only seems to work in one 'direction'... it'll convert code into a Widget but won't convert a widget into edit-able code, which it should. Widgets are more or less open source, so if Mr. Joe writes a widget, and I like it and want to add to it, I can as long as Mr. Joe receives credit as original creator.... anyway, whats up with widgets?!?!? Am I wasting my time? Should I move on to a different project? Widgets seemed like an easy introduction to Java and XML scripting/programming, and I'm a fairly sharp fellow, so I wanted to give it go to expand my horizons, and to say "HEY! I did it!!"... again, I'm rambling. Any help/suggestions/tips/relevant links will be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah- for info: go to yahoo.com, click on downloads (lower right corner) and check out the Widget gallery... there's some really cool (and some worthless ) stuff here....

um stay away from yahoo oijits,evil is contained within...well, whatever you do go get yahoo toolbar too, and 12 other searchbars too!..............
Oh my Please stop oh ouijit master, if you truly need a oiujit, at least look into it first...

Yeah- OK. No need for ridicule, I thought the damn widgets would be a good way LEARN something new. God forbid we learn anything NEW. And, yes, I was bored. SO WHAT?!?!? lol
