YANST (Yet Another No Sound Thread)

I am having some real trouble getting sound on my laptop after a fresh XP install. I have a Sony VGN-SZ230p/b laptop. Per Sony's website, it has a Sigmatel HD Audio Device.

So I need drivers right? Sony provides them on their support site.

Downloading this and installing goes smoothly. Install completes, I am told I need to restart. Restarted, the system is Soundless still with no Audio Device.

Ok, so there is an update available which is actually just an updated Sigmatel Audio driver also listed on Sony's support site. Listed below:

Upon trying to install this file, it lets me know that there is no device present and exits the installation.

So I get and install Everest. I have the full report available, but under audio devices, it lists the following:

Device Description Type
Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M - High Definition Audio Controller PCI

From what I understand, this is really not possible. I have updated my chipset drivers.

I have also downloaded and installed the Realtek HD Audio driver for some reason...I guess out of despiration.

Any help with this would be extremely apprecaited.

 

I understand you ran the everest report but it will be better for all of us if you posted it so we can see exactly what your system consist of.

You have high definition audio which requires a separate Microsoft update. It's called KB888111 and you can download it from this direct link. DO NOT install it right away! Uninstall your current sound driver and restart the PC; cancel the hardware wizard if it opens when you reboot. Then install KB888111. When it's done, go ahead and reinstall the sound driver and restart the PC when it's done. That should do it!

Thank you for the reply. I followed your steps exactly but unfortunately this did not work. I only have the ability to uninstall the Modem/HD Audio Bus drivers.

Then After restart, the wizard noted it was there and needed drivers. Installed the MS Updated. Restarted, then installed the modem HD audio driver linked above.

 

There might be some conflicting drivers going on. I have 2 different MS HD Audio packages.

I appreciate your reply, but unfortunately this did not work. I only have 1 audio driver to uninstall, the Conexant Modem HD Audio Bus driver. I uninstalled this driver, rebooted. Wizard picked it up as a device needing a driver, but I installed the MS update you provided first. Rebooted after that, then installed the conexant driver found on Sony's website and rebooted again. Unfortunately I still don't have an audio device installed according to XP.

Just an FYI...new users often have posts that automatically go into moderation when they contain a link so they can be reviewed before they are live to the whole forum. The reason for this is that we get so people signing up just to spam our forums with garbage or URL's that are malicious.
