Any software questions, you can toss my way, I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge, being a new PB user myself.

THANKS! I don't know if your into gaming and I got this mostly for it being ultraportable and perfect for my business but how is it for games?

Oh and how did you make out with the taser? What kind did you end up going with?

  8. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Not bad, not great. Its like any other laptop, not really meant for games, but can squeeze by. I'm assuming you have the newer revision than mine with DDR2?

At any rate, WoW works ok, but likes a lot of ram, WC3 runs like butter. Diablo II runs like crap, but thats because it runs under classic.

I've not tried any other games yet. As I'm sure you've noticed, Mac game requirements are less stringent than their PC counterparts.

I'm waiting for the intel iMacs before I do any real gaming again.

Or maybe I'll repair my PC. Its a tough choice, because I don't really care for Windows anymore. I mean, its a fine OS, barring security flaws, virus problems, and it being a spyware magnet :p

I'll get the m18L when I get a chance. I've been so busy with Christmas stuff and finals, I haven't picked one up yet.

Finals? what finals? I tell you what I don't miss that!! Well here goes I must say opening their package is kinda cool I set it up perfect coffee, my favorite chair the whole 9. I love WC and haven't played WC3yet looking forward to it.
I might have a couple of questions later. Oh and Thanks again!!!

Oh, smething else. After installing softare, and even updates, periodically go to the Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, and repair disk permissions. Verify them first to see if its needed. Sometimes it takes a couple times. so Verify them after the repair too.

Also, get Onyx from the MG site. Being a PB user, its unlikely you will be leaving it to run 24/7, so this allows you to execute cron scripts at will.

    Question 1
I have an sbcglobal account (DSL) Where do I get the info needed to connect my PB it says in the manual that I need to choose my connection
    Manually
Using DHCP w/ a manual address
    Using DHCP
    Using BootP
    PPP
Where do I get this info?

  15. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Depends on SBC. Are you using a router? If yes, choose Using DHCP.

    speedstream 4100 Ethernet ADSL modem

not sure still oh and what about my ip address, subnet mask, router address?

  17. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

If its automatically supplied by DHCP, you don't need to know.

OTOH, if not. I really need to know if your dsl connection is PPPoE/A or if that is handled by the modem.

  18. junkyjedi

    junkyjedi Private First Class

How do I find that out?

  19. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

By answring this one question ;)

    Or calling them.

Did you ever need a username and password to connect to the net?

  20. junkyjedi

    junkyjedi Private First Class

    Yep sure have

  21. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Go to System Preferences, Network, and click configure for your network card.

    Click the PPPoE tab.

    Enter in your info.

If you are still in the inital setup phase of OS X, skip the internet configuration until its done.

So skip the internet config and proceed w/ the osx setup I am in the wireless service setup screen and it is asking me to enter a wireless network to join w/ password but it is not allowing me to skip it

I am going offline for a minute to bring my DSL modem from my offici to another room to go online again I think I should be right back(should... )

Is your modem wireless, or are you using a wireless router?

  26. junkyjedi

    junkyjedi Private First Class

Ok I'm back up and on the powerbook and I've got a couple of dumb questions
1)How do I switch to full screen view
2)What is the best way to tweak the color and resolution it seems kind of off
other than that it works great

OH and I am not using a router at all yet but I have a linksys 2.4GHz broadband router sitting next to me that I would like to use but I don't know how to go about doing that can i even link a mac and a pc to the same router? any ideas? Oh also the modem is not wireless it connects to the eathernet port that is all I had to do was connect the cable to the port on the PB but I would like connect it to the linksys

I know I should be able to figure out how to make this a full screen view but for the life of me I can't I swear to god I am mailing MENSA their card back.

  28. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Full screen, depending on app: The '+' in the top left corner. When you mouseover, the bubbles, you'll see. If you are using Safari, I don't think it will go completely fullscreen. Camino will though :)

As for tweaking the color, look under Applications> Utilities, Colorsync Utility.

As for the router, you can have both PC and Mac on the same router, and even share files between them.

  29. junkyjedi

    junkyjedi Private First Class

You mean I can't get full screen? How do I change that? so safari won't go full screen also is their anything I need to know about the router

  30. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Safari will not go fullscreen horizontally. It will stretch vetically, however. Unless you want to resize it manually each time.

    Camino will.

Safari is a nice browser, bu it still has limitations. Other good browsers for OS X are Camino, Firefox, and Shiira. Omniweb is excellent as well (arguably the best), if you want to buy it.

As for the router, you have to configure it for PPPoE. like you did the Mac. To do this, you hook up the DSL modem and Mac to it, log into the default gateway address (which is shown in the screenshot I am posting). Then once you do that, you set the Mac up to use DHCP to get onto the Net.

The router information in the screenshot is the default gateway address.

Once again YOU ROCK seriously I appreciate it. One more thing I was using seamonkey a mozilla test project and I want to switch to the new firefox beta
is it mac compatible? If so should I know anything. Also when I switch from safari to firefox will it be pretty similar to the way my PC functioned? Thanks Again, You ever need to charter a plane let me know I'll take care of ya. :)

  32. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

I've never used Firefox on Mac, but afaik, its identical in useage. Its definately Mac compatible. You could also use Camino, which is bascially Firefox, written in Cocoa, specificially and exclusively for OS X. Myself, I feel its more elegant. Mileage varies between users, of course.

You can get Camino from http://mac.majorgeeks.com.

Note firefox doesn't truly do fullscreen either. There may be an extension to fix that.

Whatt is finkcommander and what are you running linux on?I am realy interested in learning about linux and want to install it on a spare PC I have until I get to now it but how does it work for MAC? are you running linux on the powerbook?

  43. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    No, but you could.

Kind of an expensive Linux machine though ;)

Fink Commander is the gui frontend(graphical interface) for Fink. Fink is a ports collection of Linux and Unix apps. Deep down, OS X is Unix.

    Read more here:
    http://fink.sourceforge.net/about.php?phpLang=en

If you dig deep into OS X, you'll notice the system layout is not altogether unlike Linux, or Unix.

Notice where it says welcome to darwin?

Darwin BSD is the Unix distribution OS X uses.

If I recall correctly, you can run Linux on a Mac. You have to use the PPC version of the distro you want instead of the X86 version. But as mentioned above, that's a spendy Linux Box

I installed camino and when I tried to go to the plugins site it got stuck how do I escape? The program says it is transfering data and has been stuck for about 4 minutes

Stuck as in, won't load the page? Or stuck as in, its installing something?

If the program is hanging, you can go to the Apple menu and Force Quit it. Otherwise, you can quit by going up to the Camino menu at the top.

Not really sure as to what the exact problem is. Were you trying to install a plugin? Which one?
