Just a heads up for any and all:- I as a lot of you have been using ZA Free and AVG as your Firewall & Anti-Virus, and have noticed that in the past month many of us who have been Malware free are now getting HIT with nasties. Therefore, I decided to make some changes and have gone to Avira Antivir Personal Edition and Comodo firewall, and two weeks later, I must say I like the results both are user friendly and less of a “Resource Hog” than the old programs. I have also gone to Opera as my “Cruising/Download” browser and find it much faster with smaller headroom, and love their “Tab” features and easy spell checker.

PS: - Naturally ALL of these came from Major Geeks, so if you are feeling as I did, you might want to give them a shot.:)

Oh and a side note CCleaner does not remove all of either AVG or ZA after there uninstall, I had to use Regseeker to get rid of a total of 26 registry Items that CCleaner left behind. CCleaner took out quite a few for ZA, but only 3 for AVG after uninstall. I have noticed in the past as well I use CCleaner daily, and Regseeker about once a week to do my final clean-up of the registry. Regseeker is available here at Major Geeks

That combo, ZA and AVG plus SpywreBlaster along with SpyBot's TeaTimer has served me well for the last four years and still going strong. I hope you're the only one getting hit. :p I think I'll ckeck Comodo out again as there's a bit of a buzz here about it. Never heard of Avira.

Yea Augie thats what I thought too, and ZA and AVG let through some minor nasties for me but others here have been hit hard with the same combo, I should point out that my monthly visit to Bitdefender & Panda gave me my first clue just last month when for the first time I had been hit. That's my measure of how well my Firewall and Malware defences are doing along with some other scans thrown in from time to time.

You've never heard of Avira? But maybe you've heard of Antivir? It's the number 1 most downloaded anti-virus here in majorgeeks. Avira is the maker of Antivir. And AVG is a resource hog.

What I recommend: Comodo Firewall or Zone Alarm Free. Antivir. Super Anti-spyware, Spyware Terminator and AVG anti-spyware and A2 Hijack Free. (If you think Spybot and Ad Aware are still the best, try those I mentioned.) And for malware immunizers, Advanced Windows Care protects from almost 30,000 items.

BCGRAY: hi, as i browse thru the posts, i have noticed that it seems that a lot people are using free virus protection and firewalls. is that norm? i have been paying for my protection, and I am member of aol, and use their's too.
only one time in all the years i have been online, i got infected, and thats because i let someone use my pc.
had to take everything out and reinstall and it is fine, in fact i still have that pc.
but, let me ask something else, what is the best software to use to protect one's self?? is there set rules? or guides?
    many thanks

I have always paid for Anti-Virus software. I used to use Norton all the time, but I got hit a couple times, nothing major, but I never liked how slow Norton made my machine. I have been using Microsoft's Windows OneCare since April and I love it, virus-free and it doesn't slow my system down. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have only used free software like AVG or Anti-Vir for my friends or relatives who don't see the value in purchasing preventive maintenance software like Norton or Windows OneCare, and I was not impressed. AVG did nothing to help a friends PC that was hit by several fake Codecs that were really trojans.

i am using norton now because it came with new laptop, i have been reading about onecare, and i may switch to it. i heard about some bugs in onecare and thought i just gave it some time to work everything out.
well, i have said,"you get what you pay for" and so when something is free, i become a little skeptical about it
    but thanks for reply

I had ZA until one day I could access no webpage at all. Uninstalled, installed it again and figured that it was the reason. So I switched to Comodo but I can't figure out how to activate it. I got the mail but there was no activation code.

Man did you know who pays for those comparisons.................Just a hint it ain't the "Freeware" folks

Most of us Geeks that have been around awhile computing have ground our teeth on Norton, and years ago it was a terrific program, but with time the "Old" programs gain bulk and slow down just like us Humans.

Now all we need is someone to come here and tell us that the Windows Firewall is best, because it comes from Microsoft;) :D

Maybe you should try to see the other comparisons from other sites. You always see prices and 'buy now.'
