Yet again, can problems in a phone line slow modem?

Have asked this several times, in different ways, on several different days. There is a sound like wind in my phone line. It is quite apparent. I am wondering if this could be slowing down my modem, an interior modem, 56ksomething, as my internet surfing has been slower than the economy. My computer runs fine when not connected to internet. I ran a diagnostic for the modem that comes with its program. It displayed lots of mysterious markings and lines of numbers, dots and dashes, within which was a hidden code predicting the end of the world; but after each of these was the work ''ok". From this I decided the modem is working ok. But is it slowing down because of the noise in the phone line, or for some other reason!! I read somewhere, probably here, that the modem could slow down if there was a loud connection, so as to keep data from being lost. Can I pay someone to give me an answer, then? Can you recommend one of the downloads to help me discover the problem?

Yes, noise will definitely slow your connection down. Call your phone company and explain to them what's going on. Just for some extra ammo, run the speedtest.com and if you're way below 45K then that is your problem. Start with explaining the noise that you hear when talking on the phone and then say that you have a dirty phone line because your 'net connection sucks too, not in those exact words though. I would think that this same answer was also given in your other threads as I haven't read them yet.

Networking ain't my thing but I do know dial-up first hand. Audibly noisy line will drop many packets of data thereby reducing your speed.

    I work for an ISP.
If they are having issues with DSL and phone static issues a lot of times we have them get the phone fixed first.
Not sure if this converts over to dial up but I don't see why not.

Static on the lines affects dial up in a huger way then dsl in most cases, but will affect both.

    Hi,

Sorry to crash the thread, but my internet connecting seems to be going a little slower at home lately (the past two days) and I was wondering if it could be a line problem as my download speed is still the same on speedtest.net as its always been?

Would it be best to contact my ISP to get them to check both or is there a way I can check whats going on? Oh and I have all my services (phone and broadband) with the same company, if that makes any difference.

    Thanks,
    Nath
