    Hi and welcome to MG's,
Can I have the Make and Model of your laptop please, I believe that you need a Conextant Audio driver but I am un-sure of which version, so the make and model of your machine will point me in the right direction.

You could in the meen time try this ..... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-10516-1

    Hi

I would as you have SP3 for Windows XP and don't need the HD UAA Audio driver that Microsoft list for audio issues for sub SP3 versions of Windows the following and see how you get on

Install the Intel Chipset driver HERE and reboot (do reboot as its important for the driver to fully install) then install the Audio driver HERE, reboot and test audio.

Do also let us know if you have any yellow ! marks in device manager and by what device?

Have you tried the driver that I linked in my first post??? .....

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-10516-1

try it and let me know of any errors. I have done an extensive search for the drivers for your machine and cannot find any support from the makers of your machine. So it could be a case of trial and error unless you know some one who has the same model as you,and ask them what sound device is showing in their device manager.

    Hi

Do try the audio drivers Iain.t posted above and reboot after installing to see if they work, if they do not then try the below.

Enter SERVICES via Control Panel > Adminsitrative Tools and then look down the list for Windows Audio and double click it, then make sure its set to Started and its startup type is Automatic, then click the Dependencies tab and write down all the services listed and then go to those services and make sure they are all also Started and Automatic, reboot a test audio.

If that doesn't work try this HERE

If that doesn't work then try the below and the guide assumes you have the Chipset driver and Audio driver already downloaded for your PC model.

    david,

Diagnose and repair sound playback problems automatically is failing on my latop. it says this is not applicable for my laptop .

I tried making sp2 in regedit and installing the audio driver after reboot but sound is still not coming.

any other way to check which multimedia card is on board.

    Regards

    Hi

The best way would be to contact HCL Infosystems and ask them what model Audio card did they install in your laptop and ask them also for the driver for XP, as many OEMs (companies that custom build PCs) may customise the hardware that they use so in some cases while you may have an Intel or Realtek Audio card its not a generally available card and in being customised needs a specific driver.

    Hi

Do let us know how you get on with HCL and I will as will a few others here who deal in driver issues, see what we can do to help you fix this with new ideas.

If the Services and the UAA HD Audio driver as in you trying again with the registry hack and with you already having SP3 anyway that has the UAA HD Audio driver built in, its a hard thing to diagnose now.

I would as a possible boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and see if you have audio? if you do let us know as this will lead to a new course of action.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, tanuj11.

Just a couple of outside-the-box suggestions:

    1. Access you BIOS setup upon restart (you have an American Megatrends (AMI), so it's usually <DEL>, but the access keys may be <F1>, <F2>, etc.), make sure that onboard sound is enabled.

    2. Do you have the capacity to burn CDs/DVDs? One thing you might try is booting to a Linux distro (Mint, Puppy and Ubuntu are all nice and easy). Download the .iso file, and burn that file as an image to a CD/DVD (ImgBurn and InfraRecorder are good free .iso burning programs if you don't already have one).

A quick tutorial for the image burning process using ImgBurn is located here.

Then boot to that disk, and run the OS as a live environment (in other words, don't install it - just run it from the optical drive). If you then have sound, you can assume that Windows or associated software is the source of your audio problems.

To follow upon this line of thought: from this link, I see that this machine may have been produced with a Linux operating system in mind.

    ******

Has this machine always had audio? Did some event occur that disabled the audio?

Damn good idea and suggestion Caliban on this, I guess I need to add using a Linux Live CD to me thoughts on driver issues where hardware maybe an issue as it will likely rule out hardware as the issue as in if Audio works in the Linux CD then its not hardware.

    Hey, David.

I let you guys do all the grunt work - I just drift in, fire some shots from left field...;)

Hey left field is a good place to be, and while I know its a huge Download for many it is a great viable suggestion to troubleshoot Hardware issues, I will steal your suggestion for use with other members issues in this ilk :major

I hope tanuj11 this advice helps you or at least gives us some more information to go on to help your issue.

I can not read that type of file, my advice would be to contact HCL ....

    http://203.90.70.138/hclsupport/compln-desk.jsp

this is the contact point for them you will need to add the required info and then post your issue to them, hopefully they will be able to shed more light on this.
