My system is not allowing me to copy or move files (photos) within my laptop, or from the my Drop Box where I copied them to, back to my laptop. It says I don't have permission.
I am the administrator, and am identified as such on my laptop.

So. What's going on, and how do I correct this. No one uses the laptop but myself.
    Thanks,

Check the permissions of your target folder.

I ck'd the target folder(s), set & reset the properties-security settings. Of the 4 group or user names, all show full permission. The last, "Home User" allows only 'Read' & 'Read& Execute'. I can edit and apply permission for all settings, and it appears to accept them. After I try to copy the file to another location, and it says I need "administrator' permission", when I return it has reverted to only those 2 permissions.
I haven't figured away to make those settings permanent, and don't know if that would solve my problem.
    Ideas are welcome. Thanks.

I have successfully created full permissions for the drives themselves. Full permissions show up in some files I want to copy. However I still get the same error message when I try to copy.
The other step that worked for the person mentioned was to reset 'sharing' on/from my desktop. I did that with each drive, though I don't see the same options as in the other post. I may be missing something, but what I have done hasn't solved the problem.
    What can you see? Thanks.

Looking at the spec for that laptop it originally had a 1.5 TB HDD, not a SSD, so how did you install Windows on to the SSD? If you reinstalled Windows from scratch or from a recovery disk it would not 'adopt' your old Docs, Pics, Music etc folders, it would create new ones in C:\Users. And in turn, your old user folders will not accept access from the new unrecognised Administrator.

If you copy the contents of your old user folders to the new ones your permission problems should be a thing of the past. If there is insufficient room on C: for that then you will first have to move the folders to another drive.

You know things I don't know about, so I will talk to the folks who installed Win7. I also have to find out if I have the 'Old' files at all.
Does this fit what you are thinking?? The files I'm trying to copy were very recently loaded onto my laptop, then uploaded to Drop Box. Now, when I want to copy them fro DB, to a directory on the same laptop, I get the 'you don't have the right' message.
Would this fit what you're describing? Thanks.

The point is that certain folders such as Docs, Pics and so on belong to a user profile, and Win 7 security ensures that only that user can access them. It does sound in this case that a new admin user has been created and is trying to access the old folders - without success.

If you create an entirely new folder and then try to move or copy your files into it, do you still get an error?

I tried copying the Drop Box photos to a newly created directory. Same results.
I am the only one that's ever used this system, and am not aware of having created any new, or conflicting Administrator profiles. How would I find that out?
    Thanks

Getting late here so I'll be signing off after this but the new admin user was created when Win 7 was installed to the SSD, it isn't anything you have done. I'll sleep on it but had expected my last suggestion to work. Hopefully someone else will have a solution.

If you're just trying to access your files and copy them over to a new folder, here's an easy solution.

    1. Download a linux live cd image (preferably Ubuntu or Fedora) and burn it to a disc.
    2. Boot from the cd/dvd to launch a live linux environment.
    3. Navigate to the location of your files, copy them to your new folder.
    4.Exit and reboot to windows.

You should now have access to the new files you copied over, so you can delete the old ones denying you access.

If however, your goal is to access the same files from windows for whatever reason, you can try creating a user with the exact same user name that was used to create the files you are trying to access, this should work. If you were using windows 8, it would definitely work if you used the same microsoft email address login.
