OK, my Remington R1 is going back to the maker AGAIN. The first time was because the mags sold with the gun did not work, but aftermarket mags worked and still work. Remington paid shipping both ways, and it works with their mags now. But, I have a lot of wear on the slide. This is a low round count gun, I bought it during the height of the great ammo shortage of 2013.

I really want a Commander gun, which is my gun with a new barrel, shorter barrel and slide, the slide it the damaged part. Gonna stick a note in the case requesting that, and see if Santa exists.

The picture is the slide lock notch on the slide. Note the 'rounding' and wear on the edges. It is peened up as well, you can feel it with your finger. Another website has blamed it on the bullets in the mag hitting the slide stop, pushing it up into the slide stop notch when shooting. I have somewhat confirmed this, but am not an expert. But there is copper on the slide stop, which there should not be.

Just one question, why do you need a gun.

"the great ammo shortage of 2013"? :-D Is that like the great depression for gun enthusiasts? Why was there a shortage?

I'm pretty sure 'need' would not be the word Fred would use for his guns. Or maybe he would, I don't know. But from what I've seen, I'd call him a gun enthusiast and collector.

I believe in the Bill of Rights, not the bill of needs. :-D

And just so you don't worry, my every day carry gun is not that gun.

After the Sandy Hook shooting and the subsequent attempts to ban guns, people started buying guns and ammo like crazy. Think about a guns shop that normally has 6 display cases full of guns only having 3 guns in stock.. Ammo is just now becoming available locally in the last few months. AR-15 stripped lowers that normally sell for $100 were selling for $300...

In Academy Sports, the handgun ammo was put behind the customer service counter, and they had limits, 2 boxes per caliber, 3 boxes total. When it was in stock. Prior to this, you could just walk in and buy 3 or 5 or 10 boxes of whatever you wanted.

.22lr ammo is still hard to find. .22 used to be super cheap, available and easy to find. Not now. My friend that owns an ammo company was working 7 days a week for probably 6 months, and that was for bulk orders. I don't reload ammo (yet) but am told that the bullets (the projectile part) primers and gun powder were hard to find and much higher. Supply and demand...

Many things like extra magazines are sold out. Thus, the 'Great Ammo Shortage of 2013'.

Personally, I am slowly stocking up on AR-15 magazines. I sometimes find them for around $10. During the shortage, they were selling for $40-$50. Supply and Demand can work both ways... :-D

My mention of the ammo shortage was to state that it is a very low round count gun, with wear with low usage, I was concearned about how it would look after a few classes and my regular shooting when I can get ammo.

Ah. Well, that makes sense. I wonder how many people stocked up for the purpose of making money off of it.

Anyway...the manufacturer can't replace the part that wore down? Or is that what you are sending it back for?

The part that is worn down is on the slide. They are taking it back for repair. The slide would have to be replaced, at least in my opinion, it is one big piece of stainless steel. The top part of the gun that holds the barrel and firing pin.

What does Remington say? Do they have a fix? Getting a new slide will fix your current issue, but that stop lever could keep interfering and you'll end up going through this again. I would expect something a bit more polished from a century old design.

Remington is sending me a package to send it back home. Again. Will see what they say, and do.

And I suspect the Prophet John Moses Browning is spinning in his grave. And Remington is not exactly a 'new' company either... Many levels of fail here, in my opinion. I mean, the Remington Rand made WWII 1911's then typewriters.

I suspect Remington will replace the slide and actually (gasp) fit the slide stop to the gun.

Here's a question for you - What's the best way to defend yourself when some wacko fanatic is coming at you with a butcher knife or machete intent on hacking you to death?

Personally, I wouldn't want him to get too close but that's just my opinion, you do what you think best.

I thought about your question for a while. I really don't think I can answer you. I see you are in a different country, so perhaps it is a personal/cultural difference. I am all about choice and freedom, and you seem to not be in favor of guns, I respect your opinion.

I can't really comprehend why someone would NOT want to be able to protect themselves and their loved ones with the same or better arms than the criminals. A gun is the only thing I can think of that makes a #110 pound woman equal to a 300 pound crack addled rapist.

But, to each their own. :cool

So do I. And it says "well regulated militia", not "citizens may own their own personal combat arsenal". It was written to ensure that when the need arose to defend your state from the English, Spanish, or French in colonial times the militia would be armed sufficiently to mount a solid defense. It was also convenient as there were no mass meat producers, or grocery stores for sustenance. If you lived outside of the major cities or on the frontier, you needed to hunt/trap or you most likely would not have had meat as part of your diet.

All caches for the militias were highly regulated, inventoried, and meant for the aforementioned purpose. Your average citizen ordinarily did not possess armaments like assault grade weapons. The amendment was meant to be utilitarian, though it's original meaning has been lost with time. I must say it's simply stunning how underhanded organizations like the NRA can be these days, especially in Rhode Island as of late where their PAC was eliminated for interfering in the legislative process via campaign money laundering. ONE dollar does not equal one vote in a real democratic republic built on polyarchy, but such is seemingly what we have become in our current state of oligarchy thanks to lobbyists, special interest groups, and corporations being considered "people".

Though you may be a responsible gun owner, one owner who is not is one too many in this country. It is far too easy IMHO for people to acquire firearms, and far too easy a temptation for misuse, or abuse of the interpreted rights the Second Amendment provides in the 21st century. Gun ownership in this day and age of mental illness and prescription drugs should be a licensed privilege, not a given right. I'd even consider biometric identification devices so you, and only you may fire your own weapon or disable the feature. Times and people have changed, and our "right" has left far too many innocent dead in it's wake. We can do far better than the worst definition of anarchy. I like this definition, but we are VERY far from achieving it: "a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government."

Imagine a world with no need for guns, police, or the military. That would indeed be a revolution...

The longer it is considered such, the longer it will be an "impossibility".

If you do a little thinking and research, your logic is lacking. And, shall we apply your logic to the 1A?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, theright of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"

    What secures a free State?

I am out on this being a 2A rights thread. If you read the OP, I was asking about metal wear on a gun slide. As Major Geeks is a pretty varied forum, I thought someone might have some info on how stainless steel wears.
