Don't you just love M$ programmers.
Running SFC (System File Checker) in W98SE, it tells me that file "zhpie.exe" is missing.
It knows it is missing but doesn't give a clue as to what program it relates to.
I'm assuming that because it starts with "Z", it might be from Zone Alarm Free version.
Can W98SE users, using Zone Alarm, or not, do a search of their hard drive to see if "zhpie.exe" appears anywhere.

Google let me down on this one. ZERO hits !!

    Thanks, Bazza

Checked for it on my nearly clean install of Win98SE, apparently doesn't come with it. And no Zone Alarm on this computer.

Now my question: so if it doesn't come with Windows, why would sfc care?

I've scanned my files for this in XP, and I have zone alarm, but it doesn't have this zhpie.exe in it. I also could not find any reference to it any place on the web. So I gather that it's not part of zone alarm from what mine is telling me.

Bazza: Ok just checked my extra computer that has win 98 2nd edition on it and is running zone alarm, no such file found. So it is not a zone alarm file.

Thanks Guys and Gals. I don't know why SFC reports it missing. Google can't help. I'm stuffed. Will continue to click on "IGNORE" to bypass it, but if anyone comes across an explananation, and cure, I would really like to know. Thanks all, Bazza

Check under %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache. Do you have anything related to zhpie.exe there? As far as I can remember, sfc checks your system files based on this directory first, then your cd.

Using sfc can be okay, but if your windows box has been updated, then using sfc may not be the smart thing to do, cause it will replace a patched file with the old version found on the cd. I usually make a note of all the files that sfc finds, then backup those files, then extract the files that sfc says are corrupted, then check between updates to those files from microsoft and the new version. Just to be safe. Or you can uninstall all of your security updates, run sfc, then reinstall all of the security updates....

My guess is that zhpie.exe may be a file that has been placed within your dllcache or one of your cab files.

Thanks. How do I "Check under %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache"?

I am very careful using SFC, and what choice (of 4) that I elect to run. It is very rarely that I use the M$ CD. Bazza

    I see you said WIN98se....

Do you have files located under c:\windows\options\cabs? If so, somewhere in the cabs MAY have the file there. It is fairly easy to add files to cabs using microsoft tools, via scripts. Have you also tried a find under the registry for this file?

Got 34 files in "cabs" sub folder. Nothing has a cab suffix, though. Nothing looks unusual there. A normal search of all W98SE folders and files does not show zhpie.exe. I have just done a search the Registry and nothing found. Anyone with any further ideas? Bazza
