Is there a work around to using
7-Zip or Peafile, without having to install the much hated Java? :confused

I would also prefer not to use any Mircosoft software either..:(

At this point, I can not d/l any zip files.

Thank you for any helf!

You need to be more clear on what exactly the problem is. :confused

Sorry about that, Eldon. :-o

I have attempted to use both of the mentioned zip files and after
downloading a file I can not get it to open..

Another zip file I tried to use, would redirect me to Java.com to
download it's program in order to open the zip file...:cry

That program was Pigzip or Pegzip.

Do these zip files work on their own or do they require other
software to open the file..?

BTW, I also get the Microsoft box, which states that the file
can not be opened.

Typically, compressed (zipped) files need a program to decompress (unzip) them. 7zip does not require Java. I can't speak for Peazip as I've never used it. 7zip will open most zipped files.

Get 7zip here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/7_zip.html

In Win 7 or later you do not usually need any third party software to open zip files as Windows has the capability built in. If Windows or other zip programs cannot unzip the files then they are probably either corrupt or encrypted.

Thank you, Just Playin and Earthing!

I will try to d/l 7Zip again and see if it works this time.

If there is some form of corruption, I do not know either
where it is nor now to fix it.:cry

The best thing to do if it refuses to unzip, is to delete/erase the file and download it again.

If the zip file is fine, Windows 7 opens it with no extra software.
Method 1: double click the zip and you will see what is in the folder
Method 2: right click the folder and select extract all.

Plodr, thanks for the tips
and I have saved them.

My 7, will not open a zip file, as each time I get the Mirco Box
saying it can not open the file and links you to Mr Softie for further helf.

I have good and bad news..The good is that Peazip is working, however,
the bad news is I do not know how this happened..

I have worked on this issue (with a few expletives) for nearly
five hours..I even d/led Winzip, which I never got to, as I had
Peazip in the lower task bar and opened it up and the zip had
turned in a exe file! :drool:drool:drool

As for Igor's 7 Zip and Easy 7 Zip, neither ever worked..

I will have to work with Winzip, before the free offer expires.

My 7, Earthling, could never open
a zip file and that is why I looked for one..:confused

Let call them, .DC or definitely corrupt as in our nations capital..:-D:-D

If Win 7 can't open zip files you either have system file corruption or malware. Opening an elevated command prompt and typing sfc /scannow will check out your system files though sometimes it fails to correct problems it finds. If that happens try running it in safe mode.

Earthly, thank you for the
suggestion..

I will give it a try!

Of course if you have installed another zip utility, and it's working, double clicking a zip file will invoke that rather than the Windows method. To get around that you need to right click the file and use Open With > Windows Explorer.

Earthling, I have deleted Windows
Explorer from my rig.

I just download, Free Commander a zip file, which Peazip opened for
me..:-D

It is not possible to remove Windows Explorer from Win 7. Sure, you can use an alternative for file management but that doesn't affect Explorer at all.

If explorer.exe is not running, you would have a black screen instead of a background and icons on the desktop.

task manager and I stand corrected it is running. :-o

It is not opening any zip files as has been suggested it should.:(

So have you run the system file checker yet?

I never mentioned opening Windows Explorer to open zip files.
You either double click anything with a zip extension and it unzips to show you the contents or you right click something with a zip extension and select Extract all.
If your right click menu is broken either because it doesn't have the Extract all entry or when you select it nothing happens, then you really do need to run sfc as Earthling suggested a couple of times.

20. Earthling

Earthling Interplanetary Geek

No it was me plodr. He has Peazip installed and working and double clicking a zip file will cause Peazip to open it. To test whether Windows can open it he needs to right click it and use Open with > Windows Explorer.

Earthling, I ran your test and can up with corrupted files.

I had to reload Notepad because I removed it..I tried to get the CBS log
but it too would not open.

Do I now try this in safe mode?

23. Earthling

Earthling Interplanetary Geek

By all means try it in safe mode - the fewer things running the higher the chances of recovery. But most important is to run sfc from an elevated command prompt, i.e. to run the command As Administrator. Is that what you did?

If that doesn't work I'm not sure what to suggest, as replacing missing or corrupt system files requires that you be able to open CBS.log. Sounds to me like you have been tinkering with Windows, trying to remove Explorer and removing Notepad, so it's possible you have caused damage that no one will know how to repair. Making changes to Windows is all very well providing you have first made an image you can fall back on if things go pear shaped. Do you have an image, or at least a recovery disk or partition?

Gothic"]Yes, Earthly, I did an
elevated command prompt as the chief of administration.:-D

I have neither..:-o:zzz:cry

Plodr, was right when he said, that Windows 7 should open
and extract zip files..In fact, Mr Softee, made these improvement
with XP OS.

Hear is the third party option: http://www.guidingtech.com/24662/automatically-extract-zip-files/

I try to be careful with removing files from the system, as there are
consequences...I did remove notepad and should have done my DD
before doing so..

I also tried to remove IE, but Mr Gates would not allow it..Gee, I
wonder why? ;)

I will check your link, Earthing..

Opening zip file is quite easy in windows 7 but make sure you have a software like winZIP, 7zip or winRAR.

There tons of threads with issues of not being able to open zip files
with dows express..Not only that, but if it is not such a problem, why are
there so many third party zip openers?

I be back, Earthly.

Those 3rd party apps have been around since Windows 3.1 simply because there was a need to zip and unzip files because Windows could not do it.
Many people do not realize that since Vista, MS includes the unzip function in the OS. Because they've used the 3rd party program for so many years, they just install and continue to use it.

Likewise since Windows 7, MS includes the ability to burn ISO files simply by right clicking and selecting burn disc image. Again people have installed ISO burning programs for years so automatically install without realizing the program is no longer needed.

Screen capture? People use 3rd party programs not realizing the snipping tool is included to do this.

We are creatures of habit. Once we get used to using a program and have learned it and like it, we don't want to change.

Excellent points, Plodr! On the other hand, the third parties may provide a superior platform..

Moreover, despite having an excellent OS, Microgates has had all to
many failures and junk products..

Hear is one program I would have thought they would have installed
a long time ago - program for cursors...

$150 for an OS and all they give you is a plain white pointer, as a cursor!

So all in all, there are many things that smaller firms can do
better and more efficient than a multi-dollar business.

He could have also named an OS after his wife...OS Melinda!

BTW, thanks for the tip, I will have to try an ISO burn!

To add to plodr's excellent post...
To zip or unzip archives can be done in Windows XP and later. No need for a third party utility.

But...
Microsoft has decided not to add support for other archiving formats like 7z, RAR, etc. Furthermore, third party archiving programs can extract files from image files like ISO, BIN, NRG, etc. And they can create Self-Extracting archives, that are password protected and encrypted.

FYI I have been using IZArc since 2006, but don't go there. Unfortunately (and sadly:cry) it's now bundled with :crap.

Eldon, thanks for the added info!!

Earthly, this is my report to you..I entered CBS and the complete file were
there! Somehow, I got the files on winzip and they opened..Just before,
I had try several times to load them onto notepad and it would not accept them.

Finally, they found themselves onto notepad, the entire 50 or more
pages! I spend the next 10 minutes viewing the enter log.

All that I found, on numerous pages was: Failed to get next elements; warning unrecognized name; expecting attribute name..Of course, I have
no idea what they mean, but these issues, always grouped together, appeared
about 25 to 30 times throughout the entire log.

I found nothing which indicated any corrupt files! :-D

It did refer me to Hillary's server, however! :p

Could it be that all is well?
