    Hi all.
I've been working on spyware in the forums, and have cleaned out pretty well. However, this whole time, my internet has been messing up the whole time. And it's not the connection, because all green lights are on on my DSL portal, and I can use instant messengers and stuff. But I had downloaded ZoneLab firewalls, and I think it's preventing me from accesing sites on my browser. I've tried to remove it, but can't find it on Add/Remove programs. Also, when I try to delete the Program file it says it's being used by another program so it doesn't work. Additionally, I've tried to remove it when SpySweeper notices it as a new startup file, but when I remove it, it comes back after 5 Seconds. What should I do? Can I delete it? What should I do? Any help would be appreciated.

It should be listed in Add/Remove, or in Start, All Programs, ZoneLabs.

You may have to re-install it again to be able to remove it.

If it won't let you because it says it's in use, the easiest way is to uninstall it in Safe Mode.

Personally, I think it's better to install it and read the guide on how to set it up, but that's up to you. At the very least have a firewall, even the SP2 one. (Assuming you have XP)

BTW, if you right-click the ZoneAlarm icon in your Systray and shut it down, can you access the Internet then?

Thanks, I did a clean install, then uninstalled. I think I half way set it up before, and that's what caused it to stop working. But, I think I'm a good now. What kind of firewall do you think I should use?

I think ZoneAlarm Pro is about the best, but Agnitum Outpost and Sygate are also very good.

They all make free, and paid professional versions.

If you are on a network, SP2's firewall is the easiest, but it doesn't protect against outbound connections.

If you can get ZoneAlarm going, that would be my recommendation, but the others are fine if you can't.

Hi, in my experince so far, Sygate is the best. I used ZA for years with good results, but after a recent infection of malware, going through the trials, I deduced that Sygate is better. It offers the same if not better protection and is not high maintenance like ZA. I started out with ZA free, then upgraded to pro. Don't get me wrong, ZA is a very good firewall, but is high maintenance. Sygate is much more user friendly for us non pro types and on the Shields-up site is just as good at hiding your PC. Just my personal opinion, take for what you will. Good luck and happy computing. BTW mrcollin, I was following your thread in spyware forums and think that Sygate would work better in your case. :)

He wouldn't be making a mistake choosing either, but you have aroused my curiosity as I have used ZoneAlarm Pro since it's inception.

What makes you think it's "high maintenance"?

When it's installed, all you have to do is click next on the wizard, and then allow or deny access for programs, or click on the supplied link for more information about the program. (also has a great help file and support)

    Pretty simple stuff really.

Anyway, they are both great firewalls, so it's whatever a person feels comfortable with.

Certainly better than the masses that have no firewall and then wonder why they get targeted.

Yes, I agree it is simple stuff, but maybe I didn't have the settings right or something, it just seemed to bug me alot and there's alot of stuff to play with and had some issues configuring certain prog.s that needed certain ports, nothing major, but Sygate hasn't bothered me at all, in fact I forget it is even there sometimes because I'm use to seeing the little green and red box jamming away down there in the tray. I still use the same programs and when it does notice a change, it is a simple question and answer box and we're done. Maybe high maintenance was the wrong phrase ;)
