ZoneAlarm/Hotmail/Gmail/Outlook conflicts?

I installed ZoneAlarm Free the other evening, and am now having some problems with email servers. Yahoo works just fine. However, I can not log on to Hotmail, Gmail or Outlook Express. I've tried using Internet Explorer, Firefox and MSN Explorer to log on to Hotmail and Gmail, with no such luck. My question is, how can I configure ZoneAlarm to work with these 3 items? Is it something completely obvious that I just happen to be missing here?

    Strange Old Brew,

Check your firewall and advanced settings in ZoneAlarm.

What did you have installed before ZoneAlarm and what anti-virus are you using?

My firewall settings are High for Internet Zone Security and Medium for Trusted Zone Security.

I had Norton Internet Security/Norton AntiVirus 2002. Norton Internet Security became real unstable the other day, constantly shutting down after errors, which is why I installed ZoneAlarm Basic. I tried lowering ZoneAlarm's settings, and even disabled it, with no luck as far as the aforementioned email programs. Now, Norton Internet Security won't even enable itself again, so I'm using ZoneAlarm full time.

It's probably Norton's giving you the problem. I would completely uninstall NIS 2002 and see if that solves the problem. You didn't mention your Operating System so I gave you the link to Windows 98 thru XP.

Let us know what happens. We will need to get you a good free anti-virus for protection after you uninstall NIS. AVG is good and works well with ZoneAlarm, get it here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download886.html

Ok, I tried all this, and got nowhere. In fact, AVG was outdated, so I tried to update it. The update would not connect due to ZoneAlarm. The only time I can connect to Hotmail/Gmail/Outlook is when ZoneAlarm is disabled and Norton is enabled. If I try it the other way around, I get messages telling me I can't connect

Did you try uninstalling NIS? If you are just disabling it I don't think that is going to work.

If you want to keep NIS, tell us how it is "real unstable" and maybe we can fix that part. NIS has a firewall and you will not need ZoneAlarm.

I don't use Norton's but it has been my experience here that trying to use other software designed for the same purpose causes conflicts even if Norton's is disabled.

I uninstalled NIS before trying ZoneAlarm/AVG, and got the same results.

In the last couple of weeks, I've seen a few problems with NIS. First, when I tried to run a Live Update, I was told that I couldn't update my virus definitions because a "callback object could not be created." I unistalled NIS, then reinstalled and updated 3 years worth of updates all over again. It was working fine for a bit. Then, NIS' firewall began crashing. You know how in Norton you get a pop up asking you if you wish to allow a program access on your system? Well, I'd get that, and then after I either approved or disapproved, I got a message that said "IAMAPP has encountered a problem and needs to shutdown." And just the other day, my virus definitions were out of date. When I went to update them, Live Update told me I was up to date. So, I had to manually update from the Symantec site.

I still have almost 2 months left on NIS (I've been renewing every year since 2002, since I've had no problems up until now), so I'd like to keep it if possible.

I can understand that if you paid for it. Go to link below and see if it looks like your "Couldn't create callback object". May not solve everything, but it's a start.

Also, did any of the errors or crashes list a Backdoor item?

I completely wiped out NIS (again), Symantec, and anything related to them. I reinstalled ZoneAlarm, and installed AntiVir Guard this time. Everything seems to be running fine now. I can get on Hotmail/Gmail/Outlook, no viruses, and less system resource use overall.

Thanks for your help Matacumbie :D

I'm glad you decided to get rid of NIS. You hate to bash certain products or software someone has paid good money for, but Norton's does seem to cause alot of problems.

    Happy to help. :)
