    ZoneAlarm prevents network access

I have 3 computers, 1 desktop and 2 laptops, networked with D-Link DI-624 wireless router. My son installed ZoneAlarm on the desktop and 1 laptop after which none of the computers will access the network. We have disable the ZoneAlarm and all computers access the network properly.

    Computer Specs are as follows:
Desktop: Dell Dimension DIM 2400 Intel Pentium 4CPU 2.40GHz
    2.39GHz, 256MB of RAM

Laptop 1: Dell Latitude D505 Intel Pentium M Processor 1.70GHz
    1.70GHz , 512 of RAM

Laptop 2: Dell Inspirion 2650 Mobile Intel Pentium 4-M CPU 1.80GHz

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    1.20GHz, 256MB of RAM

you need to go into the program and tell it that the ip range you are using is allowed. zone alarm is very good at not allowing anything to work. you have to go into the program and specify that your ip address and the one from the router and any other computers connecting are ok.

no you can go into the alerts and logs and click on the incedents im sure its created and click on each one and add it to the trusted zone. or you can go into the firewall and specifiy the range or specific ip address.

I'm Lady_Lu's son. I set her up with ZA. (Now she seems to think that I can fix it, and I'm realizing just how in over my head I really am). I tried, I really did. but I'm at a loss.

When I first set up ZA on her computers, I did exactly what you said. I used the incidents that popped up to find the IPs for each computer, then I told ZA to allow those specific IPs. Then I checked it. Everything worked. Apparently, it all stopped working as soon as I walked out the door. (typical, isn't it?)

So, after much fussing over the phone (I live roughly 7 hours from her and her network), I kind of threw up my hands and told her to allow the entire IP range xxxx.0 thru xxxx.99. It still didn't work. Sort of.

During this whole escapade, the internet worked. That's right, all three computers could still use the one internet connection. But they couldn't share other networked assets (shared folders, printers, etc.) That's what REALLY boggled my mind. I can't figure out why ZA isn't blocking internet traffic, since it's blocking everything else!

If we really can't get ZA to work, what OTHER firewall prog would you recommend? I've only ever used ZA, so I don't know what else out there is any good.

Thanx again for all your help.

well it shouldnt be but windows firewall may be on make sure it isnt. and go to my computer go to tools - folder options - view - and uncheck simple file sharing if it is there or checked. then try to use everything and then we will go from there.

I checked my computers and there was not a simple file sharing option under the My Computer, Tools, View. I believe my son and I made sure that Windows firewall was not enabled.

    next suggestion?

If dumbluck was able to configure everything for you, and since he probably knows the computer better than anyone else on here besides you, setup RDC and have him configure everything for you again, remotely:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspx

    or

    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Using-Remote-Desktop-Windows-XP-Pro.html

Both those links will get you started. If this sounds like a viable option, turn off the firewall once RDC is setup so he can port in and begin configuring everything again for you. Good luck.

wow. user-x is putting a lot more faith in my abilities than is wise. What's RDC? How do I set it up?

edit: oh. I guess I should investigate the web links before posting....

You could use this link to download the user guides for Zone Alarm free edition. This should tell you how to configure the firewall to allow you to do everything you need!
