When ZoneAlarm is running, after a whlie of browsing I keep getting "server not found" messages for all websites. I can browse regularly if I shut down ZoneAlarm or reboot the computer (but after a while of browsing I'll get the "server not found messages again"), but that's not the solution I'm looking for. I'm using Windows XP SP2, and the Windows firewall is disabled. Any help will be appreciated.

make sure that you dont have ZA set to block/lock the internet and that you have Internet Explorer or your browser on the exceptions list for programs allowed to connect to the internet.

I've double checked for those. Everything seems to be in order, yet i'll end up not being able to browse. I'm also running Avast. I hear they have compatibility issues. Beyond that, i dont know anything else.

Make certain both your DNS and DHCP server IP's are in the Trusted zone of your Firewall's > Zones panel. Here's how you do that:
    1. Go to Run type in command , hit 'ok', and type ipconfig /all then press enter. In the returned data list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed out to the side.
    2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall>Zones tab click Add and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted.
    3. Click OK and then Apply and see if that works to fix it..

im running ZA with AVG, no problems there. Maybe consider changing anti-virus programs?

  7. Nah i do not think that is the problem as I have put avast! and zonealarm on the same pc and even though i received that warning they played nicely together. Maybe try reinstalling zone alarm as somthing could be wrong with it.

While you may not have had a problem with both Avast and ZA working together ok, others may/will as no two PCs are the same.

Exact same issue was one I came across in which after a testing session, the only remedy was to install AVG in place of Avast to remove IE from crashing, so the advice to try another AV/Firewall is a good troubleshooting step in narrowing down the cause.

you may also have some negative/corrupted entries in your DNS resolver cache in which case and it doesnt hurt to flush the DNS cache.

Goto the Command Prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns then try the net again.

I second that comment...I can't run Avast and ZA...they just don't play nice together on my system so I stick with AVG & ZA.

  10. Oh ok. Maybe a good place to start then would be to switch your antivirus with another antivirus and see if that helps you out. If it persists then we rule out an OS compatibility issue.

Thanks. I"ll give that a try. if it doesn't work, i'll try another firewall/anti-virus combo.

Adding the DNS and DHCP server IPs seemed to work. Thanks.

hi everyone i got a similar problem with ZA kinda like sebdookie's

my servers address is always changing, as well as mine. how do i get ZA to work with that?

  14. Try putting the server you are trying to use in the trusted zone security. That may be what is going on.

    i do,
but after a 12 to 24 hours (havnt timed it but thats what it seems like) the internet starts going gonzo, then i will shut ZA off and and restart the computer (with ZA off)and it will seem to work good again?.....then i'll turn ZA back on and it will run fine...
    for 12 to 24 hours...

  16. Give seb's fix a try and see if it works.

  20. Wait just the ip changes and when it changes it does not affect connection? If it does not affect connection i would not worry about it as it may be encryption.

i dont know if its ZA now,
    it did it again today
i had to shut my computer off and turn it back on (restarting just messes it up more...???) then it works right? most of the time.
    never changed anything
