since about a week ago, whenever i have been starting windows xp, eset nod32 would have an error message pop up that would say that this certain file, (a variant of win32/trojandownloader.unruy.BV trojan) is quarantined and will be removed after reboot. i reboot, and the same thing pops up. I have ran malyware bytes program, and deleted some infections, but this one seems to stay. i have also ran the eset scanner, and it detected 4 things which were also quarantined.

also, if this has anything to do with it, my audio has been acting weird ever since this virus came up, (or since around that time, idk exactly)

    please help!!

What is the exact file path of the threat(s) it has been flagging?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

you can see in the nod32 log file:

6/29/2010 7:08:55 PM Startup scanner file C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\smss.exe a variant of Win32/TrojanDownloader.Unruy.BV trojan cleaned by deleting (after the next restart) - quarantined ANTON\Administrator

6/29/2010 7:08:42 PM Startup scanner file C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\services.exe a variant of Win32/TrojanDownloader.Unruy.BV trojan cleaned by deleting (after the next restart) - quarantined ANTON\Administrator

    the other logs:

i ran all these things, but the original 2 error messages from nod32 still pop up when i start windows

Then please try a rename for MGTools.exe. Rename it to 123.com and try running again, in normal mode first, and if you run into difficulties, try safe mode. Let us know how you get on, because in order to give you a complete fix, it's necessary that I see those logs.

i hope these are the right logs. i did not rename them.

also, to get it to work i took the .exe file out of c:// and made a folder on my desktop, and put the file in there, and renamed it 123.exe

    * You need to attach the entire C:\MGlogs.zip for Kes --- not any individual logs from it.

    Thanks Dr M.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\anti2\123.exe <--- Delete this file now as it is not where MGTools.exe should be anyway.

We need to see the below log before creating a fix.
    • Download bootkit_remover.rar
    • Click the underlined DOWNLOAD text to download the file and save it to your Desktop.
    • You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip
    • After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double click the remover.exe file to run the program.
    • Attach or post inline here, the output from remover.exe

Use windows explorer to delete the below bold directories:

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    ok, first thing:

i ran remover.exe, and the command prompt window popped up, and said

Unknown bootcode has been found on some of your physical disks.

To inspect the boot cod manually, dump the master boot sector:
    remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command:
    remover.exe fix <device_name>

    Press any key to quit...

it said some dates and version numbers above that and under size: 298 GB, device name://./PhyisicalDrive0 and MBR status: Unkown boot code.

there was no log file or any of the sort prodced on the desktop.

i deleted everything except C:\WINDOWS\TEMP because it said some program was using it, so i tried closing almost all programs running (all the ones except AV and realtek soundmanager and maybe some background stuff that was running, and the same message popped up, which said:

Cannot delete Perflib_Perfdata_6fc.dat: It is being used by another person or program.

Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

    -thanks

Thus for example with remover.exe on the Desktop and assuming the physicaldrive0

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    • Click Start, Run and copy and paste the below into the Run box and click OK.

    • Now reboot your PC and after reboot continue with the below instructions.
    • Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Press any key to quit...

Yes because you did not create a new log. You need to run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat as was requested ( in msg # 13 ) to create a new log first.

BootkitRemover took care of your infection. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. Enable System Restore if you still have it disabled from doing the Bootkit Remover instructions.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
