    Hello,
I have been battling this for a week, and am still going crazy. Had recent infection of Fake System Restore Virus on Windows 7 64bit system. Followed forum suggestions and ran rKill, Malware Bytes antimalware, Unhide, did both manual and automatic unhiding of icons, and MOST things are now working somewhat.

I am STILL unable to bring the look of windows and internet explorer back to normal. I have uninstalled and reinstalled internet explorer, run anti-malware numerous times, checked registry for false entries, but, windows still doesn`t look right. When I go to start menu, some items still say "empty", and, when I am in internet explorer, many sites that I normally visit look completely different. When I am at Google, for instance, the colors are wrong, and, when I highlight something that I have typed in the search bar, the highlighting is NOT VISIBLE. I just have to HOPE that it worked. On many pages, the search bars, and other fonts and things just blend together like all of the colors have been set the same. The fonts and everything looks different.

Can ANYONE help!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been searching constantly, but, no luck!!

    Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

    Hi Easter3,

[IMG] Please download RogueKiller by Tigzy to your desktop.
    • See the download links under this icon: [IMG]
    • Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run it. (Vista and Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • When it opens, press the number 6 and press ENTER.
    • A report should appear.
    • Attach RKreport[1].txt to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)
Note: It will be at whichever location you ran RogueKiller from. I asked that you put it on your desktop, so it should be there.
    • You can now type the number 2 and press ENTER. This will create another log on your desktop called RKreport[2].txt -- Attach this log to your next message as well.
    • Now type in 0 and press Enter to exit RogueKiller.

    Now run these scans:

[IMG] Now we need to run TDSSKiller by Kaspersky
Follow the instructions here and attach your log when you are finished. (How to attach items to your post)

Please download MBRCheck by GeeksToGo to your desktop.
See the download links under this icon [IMG]
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (Vista and Win7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)

Hi and thank you for your help!!!! I tried to run the programs, but, in a couple of cases, it would not let me save to desktop AND THEN run. It ran immediately upon download. I hope that this does not cause a problem. I tried a couple of times with those. I REALLY appreciate your help!! Thank you.

    No problem.

    These logs look good.

Were you able to run TDSSKiller? If so, please attach that log too. It should be at the root of C:\.

    Are you using FireFox?
All your downloads appear to be going into this folder:
    C:\Users\Jan\Downloads
I am not sure why they are auto running though.

Please uninstall CA Internet Security Suite at this time. You will be required to do so in order to run ComboFix (read the link below). You can reinstall it once we are done with malware removal.

Once you have run TDSSKiller and uninstalled CA, start going through this thread: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide

Hi, I am running IE9 and Firefox, depending on what I`m doing. Usually IE though. Following additional link now.

Finally finished running the scans. Attached are the log files. Please advise. Thanks again!!!

[IMG] From Programs and Features (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 23
    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

[IMG] I see you downloaded Java 7 Update 1, but you never installed it according to your logs. Go ahead and install it now.

Are you still not able to save downloads to the proper locations? And does this happen with both Firefox and IE?
Also, what is the 1 Anti-Virus program you want to keep? Because I see traces of McAfee, Microsoft Security Essentials, Spyware Doctor with AV, Ad-Aware (not sure if it was the AV or just the on-demand scanner), and just earlier you uninstalled CA Antivirus. Having more than one AntiVirus running can and typically will slow your PC down :(

[IMG] Now we need to make use of ComboFix by sUBs
    • Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop but do not run it!
      • If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
    • Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:

    • Save the above as CFScript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you must exit all browsers now before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe.
    • This shall launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    • Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Note: If after running ComboFix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)

[IMG] Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double-clicking it (Vista and Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Then attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)
Note: This will automatically update all the logs inside MGlogs.zip

LET ME KNOW HOW THE PC IS RUNNING AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED THESE STEPS
Also let me know if you are still experiencing any issues with hidden/missing desktop icons, start menu, quick launch, anything missing?

Hi, I don`t know who you are or how you know how to do all of this, but, I really appreciate all of your effort. My family is in the process of losing our home after my husband`s job search for the last 3 years, and me trying to start a small business so I can take care of my daughter. This computer is one of the most important parts of that, and I can`t afford any problems. I REALLY can`t. I can`t really even begin to thank you enough. Just wanted to say that first.
I`ve run everthing. I can`t get rid of the Java crumbs. Tried repeatedly in Control panel. Went back again after your latest message, but, they just wont delete. There are a couple of other programs that I also tried to uninstall, that also won`t go. The Start menu still has most programs showing empty when you mouse over the folders (start, all programs, then whichever is selected.) Not sure why. Is there something that I am doing wrong?? This virus seems super stubborn.
As for Antivirus software, I`m open to suggestion. They are all disabled now. I recently installed CA because it was recommended, but, had used McAfee until the virus. I guess it wasn`t enough. Oh well. Thank you again. I`ll wait to hear back.

    Hi,

See if you can install this program: Revo Uninstaller
Now see if this will allow you to uninstall the old Java versions.

Your logs are clean. If you ran a temporary file cleaner before coming here, there isn't much I can do for you. These types of infections (fake av) will hide your wanted icons/shortcuts/startmenu, etc at %Temp%\smtmp

    Give the below a try:

    * To Restore Accessories Program Files Menu
Download accrestore.zip unzip, doubleclick on AccRestore.exe to run it and click the "Restore" button.

Thank you so much for all of your effort. I will keep trying to figure out the start menu thing. At least the programs are somewhere. Take care!

You're welcome. One more article you should read: How to restore files hidden/deleted by Windows Recovery virus

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
