Help! My daughters laptop seems to be infected with browser hijacker I can't get rid of it. I can't download windows updates and all different browsers aren't working right, sending me to wrong sites and preventing download of AV and malware removal tools. Super anti spyware was installed and wouldnt work, have tried to install windows malicious software removal tool via USB but it won't install or run, have also tried to install spybot via USB but it wont install, error message when it try's to connect to download some of installation files I think. Any advice you guys can offer would be very gratefully recieved, many thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Has a proxy server been inserted in the browser? See the below:

    Proxy Server - Changing Settings

You need to be more specific. Exactly what happens.

Exactly what happens? Any error messages.

Have you tried to install and run tools in safe boot mode as suggested in our cleaning procedures?

Waste of time anyway as it is ineffective against most of todays malware.

Also try the below to see if you can get anywhere.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and Run exeHelper from Raktor
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Now run this: Using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

    Now run this: Using MGtools

Hi, thanks for all the advice so far.

I have done a number of things since my orginal post, but still seem to have some issues -

I have checked that a proxy server hasn't been entered - all ok
I have run the Rkill and exehelper programs - OK
I have completed all the stages in your main procedure for removing malware. Most steps went OK but I couldn't use combofix.exe as the laptop i am using at the moment is my work laptop running kasperky and i don't have permissions to switch it off. I can't use the infected PC to get it due to the infection/browser problems.
I also had a problem when trying to run rootrepeal - and error message comes up saying FOPS - DeviceIOControl Error! Error Code = Oxc0000024
I have attached some of the logs - would be very grateful for further advice

    thanks

You will need to uninstall AVG inorder to run ComboFix later but let's try to fix a few other items first. In fact make sure that you shutdown AVG before doing the below because it may get in the way of the fixes.

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 21

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi
thanks for getting back to me - I have followed the instructions you posted and i have attached the log files as requested.

I have tried using the internet again on the infected PC and it still seems to be redirecting me to unwanted sites. When i try to follow a link from google search results it takes me to a different site than i am expecting.

Any further advice would be appreciated - should i remove AVG so i can run the other tool in the guide?

    many thanks
    tom

NO! It will just get in our way and based on your ComboFix log, it did not uninstall properly anyway. Most of it is still present.

Your cause for redirections was likley fixed by ComboFix but let's make sure. Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller.

    Hi there
sorry i should have waited for your reply but i actually went ahead and reinstalled AVG already. I switched it off and ran the TDSSKiller and it says it found an infection - log attached. I will await further instructions before doing anything else!
I seem to have a problem with IE9 on the infected PC, where it keeps saying 'Internet Explorer stopped working and needs to close', not sure if this is related to the infection or a seperate problem, but it is making it more difficult for me to check whether the malware removal tools are improving things.
    many thanks
    Tom

You will most likely have to post about this in the Software Forum if it does not go away while we are fixing your malware problems.

Okay TDSSKiller found and fixed a TDL4 infection. Let's run the below scan as some earlier info implied you may have a Master Boot Record infection too.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

That log shows that your MBR infection was fixed. What malware issues are you still having, if any?

    Hi
thanks, everything seems to working OK now, thanks so much for all your help, its much appreciated.
Do i need to change any of the setting back that i made when i first when through the general malware guide on the forum, or i should i leave them as they are? Also, should i delete the various malware tools from my desktop/system now?

    Kind Regards
    Tom

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
