    Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 5741 64bit Win7 Laptop. I installed MBAM and Superantispyware and they installed ok. But when i try to update MBAM i get the following error program_error_updating (0,0,I/O error) while SAS throws up:Checking for definitions updates failed and Definitions update error Failed. I can't access safe mode or BIOS because several keys have stopped working eg F2 for Bios access and f8 for safe mode. I got into safe mode through msconfig but i couldn't get safe mode with networking so couldn't try to update anything there. I installed Driver Genius it scanned my system and recommended several updates but all downloads fail. I have created exceptions in Windows firewall for all of these. I am typing this on my desktop.

    Thank You

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi
I carried out the four scans okay without any problems. I had to update Malwarebytes manually, even though i have an internet connection i cannot update MBAM or SAS by normal means, so that problem still persists.

I need to update some drivers and i use Driver Genius but while that scans and identifies drivers for download, the download fails everytime.

My keyboard does not work properly, several of the keys don't work, especially important ones like F2 (bios access) and F8 (safe mode with networking) i don't know if this problem is related or just a co-incidence.

I ran MBAM yesterday while i was trying to sort out the problems i was having,it cleaned about 16 instances of PUP.MyWebSearch and a couple of Spyware issues.

    Thank you.

Have you tried a different keyboard. Your logs are clean so it does not appear that you are having malware problems. They only thing of concern is Babylon toolbar which I suggest uninstalling.

You may also want to try uninstalling Norton 360 ( it shows in your logs ) and rebooting. Then see if any of your issues with downloading have changed. Also try a different browser.

Thank you for checking my logs. I had actually uninstalled Norton 360 using Revo which i thought always did a thorough job,so when you mentioned it, i downloaded the Norton removal tool and ran it,and voila! i can now update my applications. So can you explain to me:

Was Norton the cause of my download problems? These problems were present before i uninstalled the program. Is this a problem that is common regarding Norton?

Regarding the keyboard, i took it out to reseat the ribbon cable, didn't help, do they just fail like this? several keys around the board not working?
I can not test another keyboard without buying one so i will just have to buy and hope that is the problem solved.

    Thank you for your help.

Most likely as it was not malware.
We see it frequently enough which is why I suggested uninstalling it.

Ribbon cable??? What kind of keyboard is this? Isn't it just a standard USB or PS2 cable keyboard?

Sometimes keyboards fail? Sometimes programmable keyboards lose the program.

Why not ? Just borrow a keyboard from a friend for to see if it works? Or bring your keyboard to your friends PC to see if your works there.

Thanks for the info, you misunderstand about the keyboard :) it's a laptop, not so easy to try a different board without buying one.

Ah! But you should be able to plug in a full size USB external keyboard and try that. Otherwise I suggest posting in the Hardware Forum.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
