Counterspy issue

OK, maybe I'm especially thick...

I'm working through the steps of the malware removal guide. I have an XP home machine. (Blech, Home.) So I have downloades all the apps reccomended.

I rebooted in Safe
Ran ccleaner
Ran Spybot - Found 142 items, 13 with reg entries. Allowed it to auto fix.
Reboot, Re-ran ccleaner and Spybot. No items found.
Reboot, re-run CCleaner
Run Counter Spy but when i open i don't see any options, no pull downs. Only a splash image with "Scan Now" a grayed out "Results" button, and "Exit.
Run scan, finds 133 items, 2 reg entries. Still no menus pull downs or anything visible. "Results button is available so i click it. New screen shows blank. No indication of the 133 threat items. I click word link for Quarantine and apply that but it applies to nothing, since there are no threats listed anymore.
I even rebooted in regular mode and under View there is no "View Scan Log"

What am i missing? And if it's something really n00b, feel free to cyber dope slap me.
