    Curious problem with lenovo laptop.
Brought to my attenion by a neighbour.
Windows 8.1 would not start after update on Tuesday. I took it back to a previous restore point and it started.
Encouraged him to take the leap updating to Windows 10 Home and continued successfully.
    But now a different problem.
If I shut down the laptop via the start/power/shut down. Twirling icons and the words'shutting down' appear for only for 1 second. Turns the Power off.
On pressing power-On button. Screen lights up. More twirling icons. Then suddenly Screen goes black. Nothing is happening. Power light still on. Screen still black.
    Nothing still happening. But...
If I disconnect the mains power cord the display suddenly lights up. All has started behind the dark screen. Windows 10 is open and ready to use powered by the battery.
I am confused. When I put the mains supply back into the laptop the screen goes black again.
I turn it off on battery power and sometimes it will start properly on mains power.
I thought I needed some suggestions?

    Best wishes,
    s.

It sounds like it could be the power jack on the system board. Does the plug have any wiggle when it's in the jack?

I am truly curious. The laptop is barely a year old and the power cord - which is used all the time, is in perfect shape. I suggested going to settings/power/additional power settings/choose what power button does/change settings that are currently unavailable/unticked the recommended fast startup and all seems to be fine.

Plugging in the mains power should NOT turn the screen black...
Oh well it is working, at least.
    Many thanks,
    s.

It has a rectangular slot that seems sturdy. I didn't wiggle it about too much but next time I see my neighbour I will try.
    Thanks.

You need to go to the Lenovo support page for that model then download and install the latest video drivers. The ones supplied by Microsoft don't quite cut it and I just had another laptop with the same problem.

Thanks for reminding me of the Lenovo support page. There were two possible graphics driver updates. One for a Nvidia and one for Intel. In device drivers I saw that the Intel driver was being used and so downloaded that one. I'm sure it will improve the html output when it gets used.
I went back to the quick start that I had un-ticked in post #3 and followed the recommendation by ticking it. Restarted the laptop and then shut it down. The twirling icon finished after less than a second. The machine turned off but the power light on the power button stayed on for about 20 seconds.
I thought something was up as the twirling icon usually takes 15 seconds to complete.
When I started up again the same problem occurred. The Lenovo words followed by twirling icon then black screen. Power light was on but nothing visible. I pulled the mais power cord out of the laptop and screen turned on. Windows 10 was operational on battery power. Plugging in the mains turned the screen black.
So thank you davismccarn for your direction but #3 unticking the quick start seems to be the answer.
    Best wishes,
    s.
