Harddrive filling up-not sure why

In the last 2 wks or so I can go from 45-50g free on my main hd to 3.5 free and not being able to run much.When I do boot time defrag(registry hives,system page file & mft) then reboot my free space comes back.This can sometimes take only a day or less to reduce down.I have a friend who suggested a memory leak but finding it is something I am not familar with doing.Could this be the problem and if so how do I fix it.I have went through all my running programs in the backround and nothing is new and have not updated those in the last 2 wks or so.I am tunning 3g chip with 1g of ram, windows xp sp2.Any help would be appreciated.

Would run out stuff first:
Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

for a pie chart program that will show you instantly, and in detail, where your hard drive space is going / has gone.

You can then pin down what program /s, is / are the hogs. Bazza

Most of those viruses if not all were in quarrantine of norton,I went to the malware section and yep I followed it to the letter and yet my HD is still filling up way faster then it should.In fact I have run those programs not once but twice over a couple of days.Makes me wonder what program do I have running in the backround lately could be causing this as those are the ones I have updated.I uninstalled,wiped the registry of entrys and re-installed norton so I don't think it's that.

As you probably already know, Ctrl-Alt-Del(ete) will bring up Windows Task Manager in XP.
Click on Processes tab will show you all processes that are running.
You can sort then to Image Name or Mem Usage, if it helps.

Another alternative is Process Explorer. Similar, but more informative.

Did you try the Pie chart program I suggested?
That will tell you what programs are using what space on your hard drive.

Well if I am reading Scanner right, by mousing over a segment, my windows folder is taking up alot of space 37.2g,atleast the system32 folder and the log files(if i am reading it right 33.4 of total) seem the culprits.No idea how to reduce any in there.

bac files are backup files. tmp are temporary files and log are log files.
Actually, you can eliminate all of them if you don't consult log files. If you don't use the backup files that are there, there is no use having them and tmp files are just that — they should be removed by the programs that put them there but often they are not and they just accumulate. So just delete them.

My guess is that if you zapped all of those files you would never notice it except for gaining the space they take.

Forget the script ....if it is log files ...you may just have to right click on a log and hit properties and see what it says ...but do the delete ...I also thru edit, added some more info on what files should remain in the sys32 folder and what can safely be removed ...

Deleted items the article said and ran scanner again,the windows folder is down to just over 3.4g, but what made my windows increase the log folders so much just within the last few weeks, and I have never changed any of the settings on ccleaner,left them on default.Should I change any settings ?And if the log files were the culprit,how do I stop them from getting so huge again?Sorry for all the questions as I have never dealt with something like this before.

I might have found the problem and the answer http://www.thecomputercurmudgeon.com/?m=200602 has an question about the trace log file and an answer which i never thought of, I ran bootvis which apparently can increase the file to amazing proportions.I hope this will help me and anyone who has a similar prob.

PS: It might be an idea to do a defrag after Windows has gone from 37gigs to 3 gigs.
It might take a long time to run it. Maybe overnight? Baz
