First ran ccleaner when that was part of the malware removal instructions, and it removed what it could. Switched to the new instructions today and only HitmanPro is reporting issues. Logs are attached. Any ideas on how to eliminate what it's finding?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
It has not been in part of the instructions for quite some time although it be be getting added back, but not it is not a malware finder or cleaner.

What malware problems are you actually having?

My brother-in-law's AOL password was compromised. His kids use the PC so I figured it was infected again, and sure enough, it was. Interesting that Ccleaner isn't part of the instructions - it was when I loaded the page a few days ago. Maybe it came from my cache.

Any toughts on what HitmanPro is finding?

Correction to my first post - I initially ran SuperAntiSpyware, not Ccleaner. Sorry for any confusion.

BTW - some problems this PC is having are:
    • unable to update Flash
    • cannot run Secunia PSI

    Thanks for any help.

It does not look like you are having malware problems, however let's check a little more.

First please complete step 4 ot the READ & RUN ME as it appears you skipped this. Then reboot. After reboot, rerun RogueKiller and attach the new log.

Now run the ESET scan in the below and attach this log:

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Thanks for your help. I ran Defogger in Step 4 and then RogueKiller - log is attached.

Next I ran ESET's online scanner, and when it was about halfway thru, stopped it as I still had Norton Internet Security active. It had found about 90 items at that time, but I did not save a log. Rebooted, turned off Norton, and reran ESET with the attached log.

Also ran the sutil32.dll file through the virustotal link and it reports https://www.virustotal.com/file/5196da76c82cd003c114103d0987f0bf5bfd19b798c1f5c12521c61829da9f01/analysis/1340150940/

I ran HitmanPro again and the log for it is attached.

Do you think HitmanPro is on to something or are its findings OK?

No I think it is a false detection. I'm a little more concerned about the things at the beginning of the RogueKiller log but these may be false detections too as I have seen them show up in RogueKiller logs before and they were not problems.

Are you having any real malware problems?

Thanks for your help - it is really appreciated. I have access to another PC that is the same model as this one, also running XP Media Center Edition. Ran RogueKiller on it and it did not report any issues with files or the MBR. Granted, the PCs do not have the same software installed. My biggest concern had been that an AOL password on this PC was compromised. Are there any other steps I can take to get comfortable on the RogueKiller log?

The password is not associated with your PC. It is associated with your AOL user account. Have you ever ( even once ) logged into AOL from any other PC?

If you had a password stealing type infection, they would have gone after alot more than AOL.

I really feel that are non-issues but and nothing else that was run considered them problems either. If you want to do some additional checks, then run the below:

Run this >>> SUPERAntiSpyware - running & getting a log

    Also run this >> Combofix

    Attach the logs

Also you can send a few of those files to the virustotal scanner I had you use before and see what they show. Unless there many/most of the scanners detect a problem, then it is probably clean. Seeing just a few scanners detect issues is most frequently a false detection issue

Thank you. SuperAntiSpyware did not find any issues when run again. Combofix did, and what it fixed allowed Secunia PSI to run and also restored the desktop background to the desired jpg. The Combofix log is attached.

RogueKiller finds the same files as before. I checked all of those files at VirusTotal and none of them were flagged by even one engine as having a problem.

I think things are good at this point, but if you see anything else please let me know. Thanks again for all of your help!!!

Sounding good. Now run CCleaner just to cleanup all temp files/folders.

Since you did not put ComboFix.exe on your Desktop the below uninstall instructions will not work you will have to modify them because you put it here:
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key [IMG] and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
